Blue Jays Place Kevin Kiermaier On Waivers

The Blue Jays have placed outfielder Kevin Kiermaier on waivers, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post. The goal is seemingly to have another team claim him and take on the remainder of his salary. Kiermaier is still on the 40-man roster and can continue playing for the Jays while on waivers. In fact, he was playing in today’s game against the Giants as this report came out. If he clears waivers, the Jays can outright him or release him but keeping him on the roster would also be an option.

Mason Miller has already thrown 286 pitches this season at 100 mph or faster.

That’s more pitches at 100-plus, in three months, than Gerrit Cole, Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani and Spencer Strider have combined in their whole careers (280). And that’s out of nearly 50,000 total pitches for those four.

Isn't Otai also a hitter

Last week, Ohtani became the the third player with a home run, triple, walk, hit by pitch and stolen base in a game.

The last player to do it was the Brewers’ Christian Yelich on June 1, 2019, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The first was Bert Daniels of the New York Highlanders against the Chicago White Sox on July 8, 1910.

If he'd been hit by a pitch today, he'd have done it for the 2nd time in a week, although today's walk was intentional.

Rece Hinds of the Reds homered his first time up today.

That means that he has started his career 10-20 with a walk, 2 singles, 3 doubles, a triple, and 4 homers (including a grand slam for his first hit).

I'm assuming the fans like him so far.

Plate appearance 22 was a HBP.  Plate appearance 23 was a HR.

.524/ .565/ 1.476

The bum struck out his last time up.

I stopped by to see of any mention of only the 2nd no-hitter thrown by a San Diego Padre in over 50 years of existence at the pro level, but instead got to see a photo of a pumpkin throwing up.

In other pointless baseball news, the 3 players identified with the largest bats below the belt when the uniforms in the Spring were rather see-through are still with their respective ball clubs before the trade deadline. It's important to hold on to big talent. 😀

The Yankees signed 30-year-old Brett Phillips, an excellent defensive outfielder who is incredibly fast and an excellent base Runner, and can't hit for his life…

Which is why they signed him as a pitcher after he hit 97 in a semi pro game yesterday.

The amazing Irishman from Japan has been on a stolen base binge lately and is up to 28 of 32, after having middling percentages whilst with the Angels.

He's now on pace for a 40/40 season.

Thanks to a scheduling wrinkle that the league is trying out for the first time, Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that the World Series could begin three days earlier than scheduled, with a change in the start date dependent on the results of both league championship series in the previous round. The adjustment would eliminate a potential break in the action — long the bane of teams trying to stay sharp in the postseason — if the pennants from each league are decided in short series.

It is scheduled to start on Oct. 25 and could stretch to Nov. 2 in case a Game 7 is needed. However, Game 1 of the Fall Classic could instead be moved up to Oct. 22 instead if both the American League and National League championship series conclude no later than Oct. 19.

Barring rainouts during the championship series this fall, that means both seven-game series would need to be wrapped in five games, a statistical rarity since the the current format went into effect in 1985. Since then, there have been only five instances of both league championship series being wrapped up in five games or less: 1989, 2001, 2002, 2014 and 2022, when the Phillies and Astros waited four days to start the World Series after having won the pennant.
