Nice is NICE !

First timer in Nice and hopefully not my last time. I saw La Cage Aux Folles both times but never knew how many gays are in this huge beautiful resort. Contrary to my expectations it's very upscale.Very warm. The central beach is potato sized rocks but great for sunbathing and swimming. The trendy Old City has a dozen gay bars snd a sauna or two. The guys are very cruisy and there's ten ads on RM and a couple dozen on Romeo Hunqz at a time. Many direct flights, even from NYC.

A Paris by the Sea in style and food.

Heres the gay bars and saunas in just Old Town:

I agree with everything you’re mentioning and haven’t been back in years. Just you talking about Nice reminds me I have to book a summer trip back. More so because Monaco is around the corner and I do love hotel Metropol and the American bar there. The small hidden Jazz bars are lovely when visiting the south of France.

Coming from a city with many magnificent beaches I found Nice a little disappointing. My boss at the time had lived in Europe and warned me Nice would be full of lower middle class Englishman wanting to know where they can buy fish and chips. I think he had a point.

I wish I had just spent the month there. Such a nice lifestyle. Parisian style and Provence food. Didn't even visit Monaco or Cannes. Just relaxed. I see now why artists gravitate there.

The beaches in downtown Nice itself are blue round stones but at least downtown has beaches unlike most coastal cities and the old harbor and historic hotels and even the old opera make it pretty scenic. The art gallery district and all the gay bars are also there. 10 or 20 miles out from downtown there's sand beaches but I like the downtown mixture. I discovered next to the volleyball courts, which have sand of course, there is a sand area where many of the volleyball players lay out. And the view from the hills, including even the Nice sign coastal switchback curve, is beautiful.

I was prepared to move on to Cannes and St Tropez because I was afraid that Nice would be more common folk but was surprised it's very upscale now and no Brits anymore (they can't afford it..the Old Town hotels are outrageously-priced now.) There's a lot of art galleries in the gay bar area and the Eagle was very very "Eagle". The food is great and nice restaurants but very reasonably-priced. Didn't hear any Brits but a lot of Americans.

I still want to try Toulon with all it's gay bars and 25,000 French Marines.

My visit was a long time ago. Perhaps I should give it another chance.
