It has become manifestly evident that the city of New York is in the process of a serious retrenchment as a result of the global financial crisis. Businesses everywhere are having to trim their scope. Discretionary expenses of consumers are being pared back dramatically. I have read that such businesses as dog walking and spa treatments are losing clients. Can escorts be far behind?

People always say that during a recession, certain businesses still manage to thrive. People still go shopping for food. People keep drinking, maybe even more! People still try to keep their mistresses and people still want to see escorts.

New York for years now has been the epicenter of the escort business in North America. With less money around, seriously less money, can escorts stll expect the same level of business in 2009? Will international escorts still make New York a must destination on their itineraries? Only time will tell.

I suppose one gauge will be the number of ads on Rentboy since these are not inexpensive. Also rates will be an indicator. If cars are now cheaper than last year, can escorts be far behind? Personally, I have scaled back my expenditures and have increased my savings in the face of the current economic uncertainties. I wonder what other members of this board think.

I guess without a lot of input from escorts, it is going to be difficult to gage but the latest trend in ad posting is "recession rates now in effect" This winter may not be the best gage either. Weather is certainly playing a factor. Myself after last year's snow issues have opted to just stay on the sidelines since travel is required for meeting.

The number of ads on Rentboy may not be an indicator as to business being down. I think the number of ads would go up as a lot of younger guys may put a shingle out because their college fund's or part-time jobs have gone bye-bye. # of ads in Chicago area is definitely higher than a year ago. This time of year Rentboy ads decrease significantly as a lot of people head south. But given the economy I think Florida, AZ and CA would be hit with siginificantly lower traffic. # of ads in Chicago has been consistently at 55+ about 10 more than a year ago, even with everyone heading to DC. It would be interesting to see how the Chicago guys who traveled in did as the weather has been just awful, cold and snow. I would think number of hour hires are up with longer meetings, travel and overnights down. The earliest I am hiring this year is end of May and even that idea is on a respirator.

From a client's perspective, it may depend on whether you were short or long the stock market. My retirement accounts were hit like everyone, because they lack the flexibility of trading and reacting to market conditions. But I did short the market last year; it was obvious to me that a crash, particularly in financial stocks was inevitable. I would cover my short positions when the market hit lows, then when investors started bidding up the market again, I would go short again. I did better than OK; I'm far from being an expert on this, but dang, my timing was pretty good on several ups and downs. So, I'm splurging with some early season vacations and hiring some "tour guides" to "show" me around. :9

If I didn't have this additional flexibility right now, I am conservative by nature and would be cutting way back in many areas of my lifestyle, even though my regular business seems to be holding steady. By the way, at the end of this week I covered my last remaining short positions. I'm going to sit it out awhile and wait before making more moves. My nine lives may be about up as far as timing the market.

I can only speak for myself and with the risk of being accused of "bragging", I can say that my business is doing quite well. My last stateside trip in November/December 2008 was very successful (probably one of the best) and certainly better than the previous two.

To my credit: I'm not a sedentary escort, I travel a fair amount of time and I have many regular clients. This current trip is starting pretty well and I'm happily busy. It's all about having a good time and making people happy. :)

Hey Guys;

Looking back on the past year, I would be inclined to say that I was JUST as, if not busier than the year before, BUT in a different way, with a few factors figured in...

Initially, when the first HIT of the economy pointed us south, there were periods of a week, sometimes more, where the was N-O-T-H-I-N-G going on. (New business)...Regulars, loyal as ALWAYS, would check in (albeit less frequently)...and, much like Steven, I did a LOT of traveling...to a lot of places I DON'T normally travel to...

Once (my theory) people "made peace" with the fact that THIS was how things were going to be for awhile, things began to pick up & my phone started ringing again...On a slow week "back in the day" I was used to working 4-5 times a week..Now it was like 2-3...

Here in Vegas, the downturn continued...room rates fell, traffic was down, & to stay competitive (and I'm FAR from ashamed to admit it), I lowered my rate from $250 an hour to $200..NOW...whether THAT is the biggest factor, I couldn't tell you, but I CAN tell you 2008 was a STRANGE year to be an escort...ESPECIALLY here in Las Vegas!

All the best;

Same here. My monthly income is only down about 5% which does not really affect anything. But not knowing what is yet to come or how long the slump may last I feel it is prudent to only spend on necessities and put the balance in the bank.

Two things have surprised me: (a) How much shit one can put in the "I really don't need this" column and (b) How fast and how much the old bank balance can grow.

This parsimony could become a habit. :)

In terms of the number of escorts advertising, I would expect this to be a countercyclical business - more downsizing by mainstream employers means more young guys looking to supplement income. Ditto the college crowd - cutbacks in part-time student jobs and student loans should mean more students putting out the escort shingle.

Assuming this is a business that is responsive to supply and demand, at a time when there is likely to be more supply (more guys advertising) and less demand (fewer clients with discretionary cash to spend hiring escorts), there should be downward pressure on hourly rates.

But this will pass, eventually. In the meantime, those of us whose incomes have held up should consider it our "patriotic duty" to continue hiring escorts so that the profession can continue to thrive.:D

Don't get me wrong Guys..BUT the NOTION that "Down and Out Means Put Out" for Cash among the College and Majority of Young Guys.. is probably the Funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

I guess it is in some peoples "Fantasy Playbook" though! As they say either it's in ya or it isn't period! ;-)

I have seen a couple of new guys lately who are escorting because they've lost their jobs and are trying to keep their heads above water.

Both had reasonable careers and are surprised to find themselves in this

situation.

Had a great time with both.

Charlie..Gift Card Novel Idea! BUT the odds are anyone Contacting said Working Guy to redeem his Gift Card would probably get a..

SORRY I RETIRED LAST WEEK! Your Gift Card is Null & Void! ;-)

I'm amazed at how many of these guys actually think "Ask and Ye Shall Receive" is included in "Working It" for a Living! I'm guessing they read a different Bible! LOL

Then again the old "well I can reduce my Rate for you" usually applies in 8 out of 10 cases! ;-)

Looking at the reviews on this site, a lot of the best reviewed twinks and other escorts are charging $300/hr. That's up from the previous $250 standard for the high end twinks. Of course, there are exceptions.

I've noted two things for the FTL area:

1. The last time I looked, at least half of the escorts on Rentboy were listing $250-$300/hr as their rate. Whether they're getting it, who knows? One escort listed $500/hr. An older former porn star lists $800/hr.

[b/]So did somebody say something about the recession reducing rates?[/b]

2. An increasing number of guys on the two leading hookup/dating sites have Profiles in which they say something like "looking for generous men." On one of the sites there's a PRO section for escorts and masseurs. Those who want to be more discreet on this site are making it clear in their Profiles that they want clients. I'm seeing an increasing number of this more discreet advertising.

This is maybe not too relevant to the state of the economy for gay escorts. But I was in New York a couple of weeks ago, and twice in one night, female hookers in cars pulled over and asked me if I wanted company. The first one (actually, there were two women in the car) handed me business cards advertising their massage business. They cursed me out and pulled away when I asked if maybe they had a brother in the business. I lived in New York for years, I travel there several times a year, and that has never happened to me before. I choose to interpret this as a sign of tough economic times. It cannot be that I look more and more like a customer as the years go by!

michaelnc..As far as THE "Working Girls" go you should see 5 Pages of Pix's and ADS in the Village Voice for "Massuse" etc! As far as I see EVERYONE is scrambling for Biz!

Some of the ASKING $300 Working Guys just don't want to deal with more than 1 Client a day for more than 1 Hour, otherwise they have to DO 2 guys a day! LOL Actually that makes sense as they know getting $600 for 2 Hours is not a common thing Day In and Day Out!

Some of these guys who say BIZ is UP..Probably mean they have gone from 3 guys a week to 4 guys a week, in a GOOD WEEK! Most guys are very uneasy nowadays about losing a "Monthly Regular", who usually chipped in for his RENT every Month! ;-)
