I thought it was a piece of shit which made him out to be a saint. Didn't even touch on all the money he took to do favors for donors. He was just another politician. He just happened to be gay. That's no reason to celebrate another crooked politician.

Even if Milk were a total schmuck and extortionist (I'm not convinced), he was at least extorting on our behalf and not selling us out. The memory of Milk has burned into the idealism of any number of openly gay office holders and political activists who continue fighting our fight. This is not a documentary: that's been out a while. It's a work of fiction written by a gay and directed by a gay, and I'm betting it has something to say about Milk and his era that are worth learning. And these gay artists deserve our support no matter what we think about Milk.

Clearview cinema has it on two screens. I got there at 7:30PM yesterday hoping to get into a 7:45 show. They were sold out on both screens until 10:40. I wonder how it will do against Australia on a per screen basis.

Rick, I'm curious if you've seen it yet. I saw it today and was inspired by the accomplishments of this man who, as a flawed human being, inspired so many people to accept who and what they are. The mixture of the actual scenes from the era juxtaposed against the hollywood scenes was beautifully done.

This man was not just another politician; he was a politician who worked within the confines of a system to advance a cause and a movement. We should all be very grateful to him for he is one of the reasons why we are able to post all of our thoughts, good and ridiculous, on a board like this today.

"Milk" in Fort Lauderdale

"Milk" is showing on two screens at the Gateway Theater in Fort Lauderdale. Showings start almost every hour on one or another of the screens, from noon until midnight. Yesterday, when I saw it, there were about 100 people in the theater, more than I have seen in years at a multiplex. Most were gay men, but there were also some hetero couples.

The film is very good, IMO, and Sean Penn is excellent. The film is not only a good story with excellent performances by actors, but also an important historical document. If you want to learn about a very important period in American and gay history, this is an excellent introduction. Or an excellent reminder for those who were around in the 1970s. Sean Penn's performance is wonderfully nuanced, from playful sexual teasing to public spokesman. James Franco, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna are also excellent. There is an epilogue to the film in which the characters are brought up to date and which shows pictures of the historical figures along with the actors who portrayed them. One of them, Cleve Jones, who was a street hustler, originally from Lafayette, Indiana, became the creator of the AIDS Quilt. Others are also still living today and involved in a variety of careers.

I would highly recommend the film.

RE: "Milk" in Fort Lauderdale

Karl I have to agree this is an excellent story. Yes there is more to the story good and bad but only so much can be fit into 2 hours. I only knew that Milk was the first elected out politician at the time and that was about it. The movie has sparked my interest and look forward to learning good and bad about Milk. The one theater that is showing it has been consistently sold out. Boobers and I were going to see it Saturday night and was shocked to see the line going out the theater entrance and down the alley way and seeing the same thing repeated for the first showing Sunday afternoon. 30,000 people were at the vigil when Milk was shot. That brought me to tears seeing that how one man could bring so many people together, it gave me a little hope that maybe it could happen again for all common good. Sean was amazing as was the rest of the cast. I almost felt like I had been sent back in time and was watching history unfold right before my eyes and very few films do that. I'm not sure if it is true but I was told that the indie theaters that are showing this are really pushing hard to get seats filled so that hopefully the film will be released to the larger chain of theaters. If it's true lets hope that the film is released to the big boys so more folk will see it and hopefully learn.

Hugs,

Greg

I just came from seeing the movie, in a Palm Springs theater filled mostly with "older" gay men. It seemed to be to be a very conventional, wellmade biopic, except for the subject. As one of the few actively promiscuous uban gay American males of the day who never went to San Francisco during the period covered by the film, I didn't feel a personal connection with any of the historical characters, as others in the audience obviously did, since there was noticeable sniffling around me at the end. Although I enjoyed the movie, I didn't feel I learned anything about the characters or incidents that I didn't already know from standard media representations (in fact, the movie relies on a lot of that same standard media, mostly from old tv news tape). I did experience twinges of the old revolutionary excitement from my youth in the gay movement, but it was generic, since I was part of the East Coast rather than the West Coast version, and they really were almost separate movements in those days. I wonder what a younger audience, both gay and straight, will make of it.

Milk. I am stunned.

Someone is going to get an Academy Award for this film, possibly multiple awards.

Why wasn't this movie released a couple of months earlier? I think the California Prop H8 voted would have gone the other way if it was.

RE: Milk. I am stunned.

I'm admittedly unfamiliar with the byzantine and baroque history some posters on this board share -- but in reading this thread here are my impartial impressions -- and I haven't met any of you:

1. Rick is thoughtful, smart and funny

2. Lucky seems like a bitch

3. Rockhard is a broken human being

Just my unsolicited two cents.
