The signs on the front lawn of former 49er quarterback Steve Young's Peninsula home say "No on Prop. 8," which normally wouldn't be much of a story in the Bay Area, a gay-friendly region which is the center of opposition to the effort to ban same-sex marriage in the state.

But Young isn't only a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's also the great-great-great grandson of Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon church. The church has pushed hard and publicly for Prop. 8 and Mormons have pumped millions into the campaign.

I now have a new respect for Steve Young and his family. Apparently, his wife's stand is more than just lip service and includes a $50,000 check.

>I will bet you there are some upset stomachs at the Tabernacle...

Don't know about the Tabernacle, but this issue is causing quite an uproar in Hatu (the backward state).

Here's a link to the KSL TV (the local NBC affiliate that is owned by the Mormon Church). Look at the comment board and get a feel for the local reaction.

There have been several people excommunicated (kicked out) of the Mormon Church because they urged defeat of Prop 8. But, none of these people are as visible as the Young family.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that his wife is called before a church court and is at least put on probation. While Steve doesn't seem to be taking a visible stance, I'm sure he'll also be "counseled" by his Bishop about his wife's comments.

And you wonder why most of the straight world hates us. When we denigrate those who disagree with us and engage in the same kind of name-calling ("the backward state") that our opponents do then we cannot continue to claim any sort of high ground on this or any other issues.

Why is that those who hate just cannot see that their hate is just as bad as their opponent's hate?

You, sir, are usually the first one to resort to denigration and name-calling. In that light, I find your admonition here to be hilariously hypocritcal. And I have no doubt that you will respond in your typically venomous way. Perhaps you'll send me personal hate mail again. Oh that's right you can't - I blocked you.

I think part of your problem is that you see it as a straight world and a gay world. I don't, and I don't think most people do anymore. Perhaps the hate you're feeling is just directed at you personally (not that you could have possibly done or said anything to earn it...) :p

Steve Young Clarifies his Position on Prop 8

Steve Young claims he is being misrepresented on his position on Prop 8. Apparently his wife's only sibling, Michael, is gay.

Barbara Young stated that "We believe all families matter, and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Proposition 8."

Steve now implies that "our family" refers to her birth family and does not necessarily represent his personal views.

As I stated in an earlier post, faithful Mormons have been excommunicated for showing support for gay marriage. Not sure that Steve's clarification isn't because of a long talk today with Mormon Church leaders.

BTW, the link I posted earlier to the comments section on KSL is no longer working. Apparently the Mormon Church had their TV station remove the earlier report and comments. x(
