Is this sort of travel really possible at the moment? Seems suspicious.....

Singapore, no. Not unless he's a citizen who's coming back.

 

Miami, Chicago and SF, it's possible with negative papers coming and going.

 

Sydney, only if he's a citizen.

 

Toronto, if you quarantine for 14 days AND have negative papers.

You are correct, but it is very limited to specific foreign nationals (students, foreign workers... do escorts count?)

If an ad says traveling to San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas on the same dates, or impossibly fast travel dates...the advertising is “fishing” for replies (and appointments) to decide which city to travel to and work.

As @WilliamM said, yes. On my trips to forum lunches in DC. I've left Canberra at about 9am and arrived in LAX at 6am the same day and in DC in the afternoon. So he most likely couldn't arrive in Chicago 'before he left' Sydney but certainly on the same day.

A footnote to that, Qantas had scheduled Brisbane-Chicago non stop flights starting in April 2020, which didn't happen for the obvious reason.
