Mayor Bill De Blasio says that New York City police should not arrest sex workers. He wants them to go after bigger fish:

“Anybody who is exploiting folks who do sex work, those are the people we should be arresting. So we’ll continue to look at the NYPD’s protocols, but I think we have to really go after the true criminals here.”

So, excuse my ignorance (Canadian here), What do you think it could happen in America if sex work was decriminalized? Besides, of course, a wave of hot guys making themselves available in the market ... Yum!

This isn't really just limited to the US but serious answer here: decriminalization would open the door to allow those that have been trafficked into sex work to seek out help without fear of getting arrested. It's terrible how these victims are the ones that get penalized by the law when they were literally put into that spot without any agency or real recourse to get out.

The T VISA program is already available but it also depends of political will.

I have given up. They all say what they think we want to hear. But I think it is way past time for decriminalization of non victim "crimes". We wouldn't be having half the problems we are having if only people who harm others are thrown in jail and not people who engage in consensual "crimes".

I thought it was this country and then I read in the other thread-they convicted a man for rape for hiring an escort and not paying him in Australia. What a rabbit hole that is.

It would also allow jurisdictions to regulate for safety and have sex workers more amenable to make use of various safety regulatory places and medicines.

Also the government could collect some revenue from reputable providers. I’d expect there to always been an underground market, like for marijuana still, but by opening it up and regulating it, the government can collect revenue from the work escorts do. And I’m sure some of us would be less likely to gravitate toward the blackmarket escorts if legal, regulated options were available. There are ways for the government to collect this tax if they wanted to, as well. Ways that protect both client and provider. I honestly believe decriminalization and taxation for sex work would solve a lot of the problem.

Just as localities individually stopped arresting and prosecuting marijuana smokers, the trend toward not arresting and prosecuting sex workers will move slowly forward. Before you know it, there will a national consensus.

I’ve never seen a scientific survey, but it would be interesting to know what percentage of Americans are fine with prostitution if it’s between consenting adults where no human trafficking or other unsavory business is going on is happening. I suspect if it’s just a financial transaction for sex, most Americans wouldn’t be against it.

You don’t need a scientific survey.

“Financial transactions for sex” are popular as ever in America. (See also: “Diamond engagement rings”)

I totally agree. And it would probably be necessary to have large fines for those who are caught operating outside the regulatory structure. Moreover, much of the revenue that is obtained from sex workers by tax, etc. can be pumped into things which benefit that community or the community that contains them.
