I don't think Downton Abbey had showers. The inhabitants normally took sponge baths, and only once per week they took a real bath, because it was a lot of work for the staff to heat all those pitchers of water for the tub.

Some years ago, I had a peculiar skin disturbance where my skin got intolerably dry and itchy. Even a brief shower with cool water felt horrible. I started taking sponge baths in the bathroom sink every morning - face, armpits, crotch, feet and hands. Once a week, I took a shower. I thought I stayed nearly as clean bathing this way as I did showering every day. Fortunately, the skin problem resolved and I can take daily showers again. Having done this, though, I wouldn't have any problem doing it again if necessary.
