My goodness he is not even cold yet! Let's wait until at least tomorrow to dance SA!

Quick on the draw but I am sure everyone on this board agrees with you.

Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign, issued the following statement today in regards to the news about the death of Reverend Jerry Falwell:

“Reverend Falwell’s legacy is not about the tenants of Jesus’ ministry such as healing the sick and standing with the disenfranchised but about shunning and ridiculing those who have suffered and died of AIDS and their families. Many faith leaders today are moving away from his divisive approach and toward the compassion and inclusiveness that Jesus modeled every day of his ministry.”

awww you ruined the pic for me because I really loved it.

>G-A-L-I-N-D-A)

No thanks for pointing it out because I was running back and forth checking which was right and just settled on phonetics. I don't have any of the original novels (I do books on Audio because of extreme ADD) for verification and can't find my playbills (Wicked fanatic here) so I wasn't sure. I almost WROTE gAlenda but didn't want to start ANOTHER fight with people who wouldn't get the GA. Thanks for being " in solidarity..." ;)

RE: Ding Dong the Witch is Dead ... Larry Flynt Comments

When I heard about the Rev's passing I wondered what Larry Flynt would have to say about this. Here's a statement that Flynt released this afternoon.

http://www.accesshollywood.com/news/ah5356.shtml

"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

I am probably going to be shouted down for this, but even though

I didn't like Jerry, I thought that Flynt went too far. The license or the right to do something actually places a large burden of responsibility on society at large. Just because something can be done, does not mean that it should be done. If the only value of something, is the "shock- value" of it, and it does not make a positive contribution to society at large, then maybe it doesn't need to be done in the 1st place.

And no I am not talking about censorship except possibly self-censorship. I also realize that what bothers me, may not bother someone else at all--but I still think that in many cases people don't think of consequences.

I do not agree. Yes he caused a lot of people pain but to celebrate someones death as some are proposing just makes them just as low as those that first caused all the pain in the first place. Party on without me thanks.

I was surprised to hear of his passing. I remember first seeing him on TV in the late 60's early 70's. While he may not have been a friend of the gay community, I don't really think he was a hatefull person as some people think.

He spoke against various life styles (not only gay), that did not agree with his theology or doctrines. Sure at times I feel he went to far, and made himself look like an idiot or bigot at times, however he stayed constant throughout his life, and many people benefited from his ministry. I think if people were to meet him one on one like Larry Flint did, they would have found him to be different than what they expected.

He never really hated individuals, he hated their life style, whether it was a man and a woman living together without getting married, the gay life style or someone involved in crime.

I never agreed with everything he said, and I didn't go along with the moral majority movement, but he did do a lot of good.

Hey Greg,

I'm sorry if this thread is upsetting or offending you. I didn't mean to seem crass but given the reverend's history with the gay community I'm shocked that you are claiming exception to Rob's assumption.

But to each their own. He simply has no redeeming qualities in my eyes and his messages (that everyone is entitled to their own opinions) could have easily been spread in more constructive ways.

So again, sorry if this has offended you.

Not so much offended as kind of puzzled as to why someone would celebrate the death of another person. Yes I didn't agree with him on his stance with gay issues but there are those I don't agree with on a number of issues but I can't honestly think of one person I would celebrate the death of someone. The way I see it even though he spoke out against gays it did do some good (glass half full thinking) it brought us together and made us realize that we shouldn't be treated like second class folk and we wont take the back seat and we'll fight. That is how I see it, so there was some good that came out of his teachings.

Hugs,

Greg

Maybe there is a little bit of southern gentility in Greg. I was taught never to speak ill of the dead.....at least for the first week or so.

Although I disliked his attempts to impose his own moral views on everyone, what deeply offended me was his duping members of small churches. Numerous small congregations agreed to contribute a specific amount each month to the college expenses of a young member of their congregation. Only after the youngster was enrolled and on campus did he discover that ten percent of the church's contribution went toward his tuition. Ninty percent became a gift to Liberty University. The hypocritical SOB should have been prosecuted and jailed.

RE: Ding Dong the Witch is Dead ... Larry Flynt Comments

I won't dance on his grave because I do not revel in the death of another human being.

While I despised him and his open endorsement of homo-hate, I do recognize the good that his ministry performed for people in need. I find it sad that they had to rely on him, but I'm glad they were able to get the help that his organization offered.

But I have chuckled at some of the jokes I've seen circulated today. One favorite:

"Wait'll he gets to the pearly gates and finds out St. Peter's first name is really Bernadette!"

He'll spend the rest of eternity with some of "our" best and brightest. Perhaps he'll finally learn the truth about the segment of the population he discarded as broken.

Screw that! I'm with Sadler on this one.

Falwell lived to a ripe old age living with luxury, power, and money.

How many suicides among gay people resulted from his message? How many parents kind threw their kids out on the streets after hearing encouraged by Falwell's message? How many kids had to be forced into straight camps because of Falwell's message? How many people felt justified in commiting hate crimes after hearing Falwell's message?

Becuase of his longevity, power, and money, how many more mini-Falwells did he create to take his place to drive more gays to suicide; influence parents to throw their kids out on the streets; force kids into "straight camps"; to make people feel justified in commiting hate crimes?

Here we are just glossing over the horrible pain that this man caused and his legacy is still causing and just ignoring his victims.

I'll even go much further than SAdler in not respecting this madman and will willfully take any consequences that will come:

Ding Dong! Falwell is dead. Which old Falwell? The Wicked Falwell!

Ding Dong! The Wicked Falwell is dead.

Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.

Wake up, the Wicked Falwell is dead. He's gone where the goblins go,

Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.

Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.

Let them know

The Wicked Falwell is dead!

You do, huh? What "good" was that Deej? Can you enlighten us to all the "good" that Fakewell did? Do you think all that alleged "good" outweighed his racist, bigoted, homophobic, warmongering and anti-semitic beliefs/comments that he spewed for 50 some years??

Dead or alive, he was an EVIL PIG! I'm not fuckin' Jesus. I was THRILLED to hear of his death. When I first heard he'd been taken to the hospital, I said, "DIE MOTHERFUCKER!". One less Charlatan claiming to know what God was doing, wanted or was thinking. Exploiting God, Jesus and the Bible for his own petty, ignorant, bigoted and racist, homophobic agenda.

No! It's a GOOD thing that some people are no longer alive. If not for the Falwells, Dobsons, Robertsons and their ilk in the world, our lives as gay folks and other minorities might not have Been, BE now or Be as difficult in the future.

Hate is learned, not inborn. The more of it that dies off, the better we all are. Dobson and Robertson aren't exactly spring chickens, are they? NEXT?! LOL }(

If you'd ever care to discuss him by name instead of by some childish pejorative that a 9-year old might come up with in a schoolyard we might have a grown-up discussion, Jeff.

Call me when you're ready to stop preaching hate and carry on a reasoned adult conversation.

Until that day comes, you're no better than he was.
