I saw this movie last night, despite the stupid title, because the main character is an escort, and the movie was reputed to have an unusual twist. The movie is narrated by X, a 30 year old (advertised age 25, of course) escort, who is supported by a coterie of twelve clients (the Catholic religious references are rife throughout the film). When one client dies, he acquires a new one, a cultured elderly man who wants only conversation until, he says, X truly desires to have sex with him. X claims not to have had sex with anyone except for money since age 12, and is severely emotionally repressed. Naturally, he is deeply in love with his beautiful roommate but will not admit it, despite the roommate's invitations to a relationship. The twist is that he eventually does have passionate sex with the elderly client--the only extended sex scene in the movie, an interesting dramatic choice--and that finally allows him to open up emotionally. Although this sounds rather heavygoing, the film is mostly comedy, and often quite amusing, so you know there will be a happy ending for everyone.

The problem for me, as a viewer, was that the plot was quite predictable yet highly improbable, with too many convolutions and flat, unnecessary characters. I also found watching the sex between escort and client unnervingly deflating--it made me feel that it was time for me to stop hiring escorts, because I wouldn't be able to get those images out of my mind.

Anyone else have reactions to this film?

First, thanks for the pointer to this film. I'm intrigued.

Second, and only barely on point to your interesting point above -- a few times with one escort or another, we've gotten around to doing it in front of the mirror. Sometimes it's been a great turn-on; other times it was disconcerting, to say the least, to see oneself in mid-hump.

We now release this thread to its original topic. :-)

Again thanks for the pointer to this film. It just opened this week here in DC. Will try to go see it this weekend.

X is the focus of the movie, but his 2 cute roommates are featured prominently in the story. A cute blond, "Blondie", should have gotten more screen time.

The younger roommate Joey is a puppy who is madly in love with X for reasons unstated. Joey, cute as he is, becomes tiresome quite soon. The other roommate, Andrew, is the hottest guy in the movie. Sultry good looks and a firm masculinity made him the guy I wanted to take home to mommy. X himself is so self-involved to the point of being obnoxious.

Finally, Gregory, the older man and the 12th of X's "disciples" is quite good and interesting to watch. The sex between him and X was a bold move on the part of the filmmaker, and not all that hard to watch!

My reaction: first good gay movie I have seen in a movie theater (as opposed to DVD or cable) for a long time.

I also liked Andrew, who is played by Darryl Stephens (Noah's Arc).

If you have only seen Darryl Stephens on "Noah's Arc," you may be surprised at his acting range. He's also a very sexy guy, and reason alone to see "Boy Culture."

Unlike the OP, I did not think a lot about the negative aspects of the film. Just enjoyed it.

Haven`t seen it yet however the cast in person, looked very good promoting the movie last month at Mickey`s in WeHo. The dancers in their ginch gonch "boy culture" undies looked even better.

Shameless Plug !. That`s why local board members and visitors alike should come to one of the LA Hooville Dinners when posted. You never can tell who might join us.?.The guest list list has included many well known US and International Escorts, Porn Stars,Pimps, Daddies, Divas "unnamed", and then some. :) :)

Playful response to shameless plug:

Celebrities do attend screenings of their films on the east coast also.

Darryl Stephens was in the audience the night I saw "Boy Culture."

Looking at the schedule for release for the US you may be right. Too bad the studio felt so little about the film to roll it out in stages across the country, instead of trying for a wider release.

I am thankful that the OP has given me the chance to see it here in DC... One of the few films that I won't wait for the DVD if can help it.

RE: "Boy Culture"

Rod, you showed your cock at the movie theater??? Remember what happened to Pee Wee Herman. We don't want to have a Pee Wee Hagen!:)

Incidentally, in an interview with the gay magazine dot, two of the actors in the movie made a point that they were in real life straight. Andrew was not one of them, so I guess there is hope. But if the guy that played Joey is straight, well, then, he is a damn fine actor!

The short answer: No

The long answer: Definitely not

Have sampled this show many times, but could never bear more than about 5 minutes in a sitting. It is a very bad gay black male Sex in the City without the fashion sense.

RE: Noah's Arc

Now that Noah's Arc has been canceled, I guess it doesn't matter much, but I did watch season one with the bf and we both liked it a lot. It did get better. Christian Vincent is a hunk, and when they introduced Wilson Cruz as a character, I was hooked. What better boyfriend material is there than Wilson Cruz?

But, as for Darryl Stephens, I lost a little interest. Those wacky hairdos and silly outfits he wore...not the butch guy I thought. Yes, I know he was playing a charcter, but....

RE: Noah's Arc

The out takes which were included in the Noah’s Arc video of the first season where the best part and worth seeing. Since there were no out takes included with the second season it wasn't worth the effort - my not so humble opinion. I agree Lucky Stephens’ hairdos and silly outfits were a bit much BUT damn he does have a cute body.

I have no memory of having started this thread almost 13 years ago. Even more depressing, I don't remember the movie at all. What strikes me most, however, is that the majority of those posters who responded have not been seen here for years.
