We all know that Viagra and poppers, when used together, are supposed to be capable of causing a drop in blood pressure that can cause cardia arrest. What are the "realistic" chances of that happening to someone is great health with no known heart problems or low blood pressure. I like to use Viagra when I'm in a top mood and nothing beats the buzz of poppers while bottoming but, and it's just my preference, I'd prefer to not have my heart stop if I'm switching things up. When I'm in the act my heart's pumping pretty damned good and I can't imagine my blood pressure dropping that much. I'd appreciate your thoughts or experiences.

Hey, I know you're not supposed to mix, but I think lots do. When I have taken Viagra and want a hit of poppers, I'm just very careful not to take too big of a hit. I've never had a problem, but then again, if I had, I probably wouldn't be posting this, right? LOL

I think if you are just aware that there is a risk and practice moderation ...

Right, I'm sure many guys use the mix of the two.

There are also millions of college football players that don't drop dead on the field from a previously undiagnosed heart defect. But every once in a while one of them does.

That's the gamble you're making. Are YOU the one with the previously undiagnosed condition that gets triggered by this combination? Were you just lucky the previous times? }(

It sucks when the only diagnosis comes during autopsy.

Like anything else about having sex these days, there is no such thing as "no risk". You have to decide where your comfort level/risk level is.

I have never done viagra before but I have tried Cialis, which I have done with poppers. I did not have a problem, but that is not to say that others would not. I have known people to do viagra and poppers and they are still around today.

However, about a few months ago at the local bathhouse/sex club, a person dropped over dead (in a towel). It was at first disccovered that he was doing poppers with viagra. It was later discovered that he had heart surgery about a year ago and was on heart medication. Then, it was discovered that he was married (to a woman). He was only in his early 40's.

Clearly, it was the marriage to a woman that did him in. :p

Viagra and Poppers are both vasodilators, essentially enlarging the room for blood in blood vessels. Viagra, through this effect, relaxes the muscles of the corpus cavernosa in the shaft of the penis and allows it to fill more fully with blood. As a result of the enlargement of blood vessels in other parts of the body, there is less blood per beat returning to the heart and a lesser amount of blood being put out with each pump of the heart. This will happen is everyone but the dose that causes a measurable effect will be different in each person. In addition to individual response to a particulare dose, the starting point of the blood pressure and levels of fitness play a role in determining how big a drop there will be in blood pressure.

So, the risk varies from person to person on a variety of factors and also from time to time based on another group of factors. This combination is rarely fatal, occasionally causes severe effects such as passing out, but the potential for these reactions is there each and every time you mix.

Also be advised, that the use of Viagra with protease inhibitors may cause the Viagra to be metabolized more slowly and increase the duration of action, but also the duration of side effects. So if you are on protease inhibitors, and take poppers and Viagra and you have a problem, it is likely to last longer and be more severe.

>Do the same risks apply to mixing poppers with Lavitra and

>Cialis?

YES! Physiologically, they work the same way Viagra does by vasodialation and have the same lowering effect on blood pressure.

>Are "protease inhibitors" used for high blood pressure?

No, protease inhibitors are used to treat HIV. They inhibit replication of the virus.

You did ask for the "realistic" chance of a cardiac event when mixing Viagra and poppers. Apparently while rare, it's not insignificant. Here's a summary of an adverse reaction review in 2000. This review is 6 years old and only includes those cases reported to the FDA as Viagra adverse reactions.

"March 14, 2000. Viagra, commonly prescribed by doctors to treat male erectile dysfunction, is turning up too often at the scene of heart attack death in relatively young men.

This new evidence comes from post-marketing adverse event reports about Viagra made to the FDA. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles analyzed these reports and found that there "appears to be a high number of deaths and serious cardiovascular events associated with the use of Viagra." They presented the study March 14 at the meeting of the American College of Cardiologists in Anaheim, CA.

In an analysis of 1,473 major adverse events recorded in these reports about Viagra to the FDA, 522 people died, most of them from cardiovascular causes. According to the study's senior author, Dr. Kaul, the majority of deaths were associated with standard Viagra dosages (70 percent of the deaths were associated with the 50 mg dose). The deaths were due to cardiovascular causes and appeared to be clustered around the time of dosing (two thirds of deaths in which the time from ingestion to death was reported, occurred within 4-5 hours of taking Viagra). The majority of deaths occurred in patients who were less than 65 years of age, and who had no reported cardiac risk factors.

The study confirmed the well-documented increased risk with combined use of nitrates and Viagra. Of 90 patients who suffered major heart events while taking Viagra on top of nitrates, death occurred in about 68 percent, and when myocardial infarction was counted, the number of major cardiovascular events in that group rose to 88 percent."

Subsequent reviews of the literature suggest a lower incidence of cardiac death related to Viagra than was initially reported during the early phases of the drug. The numbers of doses taken is measured in the billions. The number of deaths associated with it is small.

The incidence does jump when poppers are added to the mix.

Bottom line: Poppers + Viagra = Risky Business.
