Interested in seeing the replies as I am South Asian and sometimes fall into the Asian category, sometimes not.

Word on the street is that Grant is NOT Asian friendly:

And Spencer Whitman does not see Asian clients at all:

I'm black and don't live in LA but I'm interested in this and following for when I'm next in the area.

When I contact POC, I never say anything about my race before showing up, however if it's a white guy I tend to let them know up front. This way no one's time is wasted. I'd hate to show up somewhere and the guy decides not to answer the door, look disappointed, or have a bad attitude.

That's a practice I have adopted as well with white masseurs.

I have been asked if I am "Indian Indian" and "a Muslim" before.

I also had a masseur go on and on about countries the United States shouldn't let people in from, a list that included my home country

Fortunately, most have been welcoming and race is not an issue.

This topic was actually explored before:

Brothers of color, keep your anecdotes and recommendations coming so that others can see this happens and we are not "playing the race card."

Greetings All,

Interesting post!!!

I wanted to state that when I’m inquiring the services of a massage therapist, I purposely include my name as my name is a stereotypically “Black”, name.

By doing this, he knows my race, and we don’t have to have an awkward discussion about racial preferences..... personally I don’t find it racist, or better yet it doesn’t matter to me... I’ll explain why later...I’ve always had a good experience.

However, what I have experienced is Black massage therapists who prefer non-black clients... my first experience hiring a message therapist from massagem4m was one of them.

Years ago this guy got so many reviews for giving outstanding massages... I naively decided to hire him. Not only was the massage mediocre and the services were poor, I just got a bad energy...as if he was disgusted to even touch me (which was far different than his reviews).... after I left feeling humiliated, I tried to figure out why.... and find the “ism”... it wasn’t a body issue, as I was (and am) in better shape than him. It wasn’t an age issue either (I’m at least 7 years younger), after deductive reasoning I realized the guy was a “snow queen”, and prefers not to engage with his own... which I wish he would have stated. I wouldn’t have wasted my time or money.... which brings me to this:

I see absolutely wrong with any guy having preferences, whether it’s racist or not, and I’d prefer for massage therapists to be open about it. Giving and receiving a massage can be a very sensual, intimate experience and a good vibe and energy is part of that. Sometimes being attracted to that person is needed to heighten the experience. Now when it comes to employment, education, banking, and human rights, OF COURSE everything should be equal opportunity, but when it comes to physical contact , touch, affection, and any other action of physicality, no one is obliged to be equal opportunity, as it’s your body....

So if there’s no energy or attraction there, I don’t want the person to touch me either... it will only lead to a lackluster experience.

Now let’s get to ethnic guys who call white guys racist because of their preferences.... the response I always have is this:

“Why should a white guy be into you, when you’re not even into your own? He thinks the same of your race as YOU do.”

The problem isn’t the white guy with his preference. It’s the ethnic guy’s with so much self-hate, that they desperately seek the validation of white men in order to feel accepted and whole. So if you’re Asian, Hispanic, Black, etc., and exclusively pursue white guys... you’re racist too. Lol

This.

If we're going to be physically close in a private setting where for me the whole point is to be in a more intimate place and have potential for a more intimate experience for us both, I don't want to feel like it's a chore for them. If this didn't matter I'd just go to Massage Envy and be done.

I So Agree With You EastbayMike... Its happened to me and I sure will continue if I am not upfront. This also applies to Asian Masseurs..

Isn't Southeast Asian, just Asian? Vietnamese, Thai, Filipinos, etc are all considered Asian.

I'm Asian in San Diego... and for a long-time, I always felt like gay guys down here were more into "Southeast Asians" than Asians... Southeast Asians tend to be darker, and the guys down here seem to like that more. I was wondering if it was because there are so many Latins down here and Southeast Asians are more like "brown boys" (and I don't mean that in a negative way). I'm ethnically Chinese, and lighter skinned than I would like to be ;)

I never actually voiced any of this to anyone... they were just my own private musings. And then I happened to chat with a gay Vietnamese guy, who kind of said all the same things to me... and it felt good to know that I wasn't the only one who thought that.

But overall, I haven't really felt much in the way of anti-Asian vibes from masseurs here in San Diego. It's been a while since I got a massage up in LA, but I always felt like LA was more of a mixed bag in terms of an anti-Asian vibe from a masseur. I just figure it's a gamble the first time, and if I get the vibe, then I definitely don't go back for another appointment.

Great discussions all, but this dude still need to get his body massaged?.

Any kind of body work is sensual, intimate, energetic, you are touching, rubbing, breathing, most of the time nude or close to it, I need a therapist that I can click with energetically.

The way I look at it, we as clients have our own preferences too, we have the benefit to pick which therapist we prefer, we get to scrutinize the therapists before we decide, their skin color, body type, age, etc, etc... Let’s be fair, if we can say no to some therapists for whatever reason, therapists should be able to do the same to any clients for whatever reason as well. I just prefer to know if my therapist will have a problem beforehand. If it’s a problem I that’s fine, I will take my business somewhere else, no big deal.

But always remember, they're not racists, it's just a "preference".

I understand some escorts not being attracted to certain kind of men or not being able to perform certain acts with clients who are 100 lbs. overweight... but a masseur? Even if the massage involves mandatory HE that's not as intimate as kissing, fucking, etc.

Do some masseurs really discriminate against would-be-clients because of ethnicity?

Another sidebar:

Asian guys should be THE PREFERENCE for massage.

Their skin is always smooth and blemish-free (seeing their skin oiled down is just amazing, totally easy for massaging.... )

And they are always clean..

Please tell me this is satire. You're addressing racism with racial generalities? Could you be any more time deaf?

When I first moved to SoCal and saw the diversity including so many cute Asian men, this one fellow kept reminding me that some Asian guys only want to be with Asians. This friend was Asian, himself and would sometimes warn me to forget about certain dudes, how "that one is sticky rice," meaning only attracted to other Asians. He said I must be a rice queen, for liking Asian guys. However, I never restricted my dating in that way. There just happened to be an abundance of these cute Asian dudes all over the place.

At the time it bothered me if a super cute Asian dude had no interest in me because I wasn't Asian. Not sure how I got past caring but at some point I did.

As far as massage therapists, I definitely sample the rainbow.
