He has arthritis of the knees. Walking and exercise isn’t going to ease the pain. He should be working with

Orthopedic and Arthritis specialist and possibly working toward knee replacements.

"Why confuse things by posting he may have bought the wrong walker.Isn't the goal to hope Avalon has a better life."

Sorry William if you feel I am confusing there situation but in reality I am trying to IMPROVE the situation.

The walker Avalon bought is going to be difficult for him, other than for very, very short distances.

My aim is to get this guy out of his house and into car service and into a physicians office.

If Avalon had consulted a physical therapist/doctor, they would have taken measurements and gotten him a "Medicare covered" walker/rollator which would fit his needs.

He would never have seen a bill.

They would have provided him with training on how to operate it and maneuver around.

Avalon will have a better life when he is not hibernating in his dark apartment, devoid of human contact and making decisions that are bad for him.

Sorry, I'm a hard case and will always encourage people too "do the right thing,"that is, the intelligent, moral and ethical decisions.

All that is wonderful, but Avalon has not had an easy life ((certainly not his fault). He has right to be scared about his next decision his next decision. Avalon is 65 years old with many physical problems.

He has just started to use a walker. He makes decisions slowly and thoughtfully. He may not care that you are so insistent; Avalon has more important issues.

Yeah, but does Medicare only cover the cheaper walkers? I sometimes end up going cash pay rather than going through my HMO because the insurance makes it a huge hassle or because the out-of-network providers in a particular specialty are much higher quality than the in-network providers.

I know that Medicare will cover the cost of a wheelchair every 5 years. It needs doctor's approval. I know someone who got one 4.5 years ago and can apply/request a new one in June of 2019.

Good for you, getting some help! I wish you well. More than that, I wish you "awesome."

So that means you need to trick out that puppy. I say have "ghost" flames painted on the side,

and get those weirdo hubcap things that spin when you come to a stop.

And add a horn that plays "La Cucaracha", for all those pedestrians who you need to get outta your way when you hit top speed! :)

An old friend of ours is no longer able to take care of himself, so a friend of his has power of attorney for his care. He needed a walker last year, but because he has Parkinson's, he needed a better quality one in order to get out of his house and get around in his small town. When she tried to get what he really needed, she found that it would take six months to get approval from Medicare for the best model for him (it is sort of the Mercedes-Benz of walkers), so we ended up quietly buying it for him, and told her to tell him that Medicare had paid for it. The only problem is that it is so much sturdier than the cheaper types that it is heavy to collapse and put in the trunk of a car.

You can often find some real bargains for this kind of stuff on Ebay, as when the user passes the family has no use for it. My next door neighbors got a barely-used secondhand power wheelchair for only $200. It would have been several thousand new.
