I was watching a British show ("Coronation Street") and the word "augur" was used twice. I wonder how many Americans would know it means? Few I think.

I was watching some other show where the word "peripatetic" was said. I doubt if 1 American in a 100 would know what it meant.

I once referred to a female friend's boyfriend as her "beau". She asked me what it meant.

All one needs to do is listen to our Dear Leader and you can tell that we are in deep excrement.

How many people know the work phallus?

I hope you are kidding about augur and peripatetic. The words Beau and courting are not used much now, or 50 years sgo.

I have a land line phone but it has buttons. I don't have a cell phone. Several times online when I wanted to purchase something I was asked to provide my cell phone number to confirm. Couldn't continue.

Beau I knew, and have heard it not too many years ago. Augur, I thought of a auger for drilling holes. Didn't realize there was another word augur. Peripatetic, never heard of it.

I've always liked the word courting. While an old fashion term, it nicely describes the path two people take to be as one.

.

Greek and Roman history for that, Auger for drilling holes? I never would have thought of that. I am ignorant of so many ordinary things that most people know.

Well at least it has buttons! I remember when there was a "dial" on the phone before "Touch Tone" phones. Touch Tone uses DTMF frequency modulation....

Bell Labs invented many, many things we have today. Including transistor....

My uncle was impressed that I knew the difference between the Parthenon and the Pantheon.

I impressed a co-worker because I knew the opening line of the Aeneid "Arma virumque cano".

Showing off?

Just showing how a little bit of knowledge can impress some. But it has to be something that I like. History, Virgil etc..

But I am sorely ignorant in the most rudimental things that people take for granted every day. I have never changed a car tire. & etc..

I have never changed a car tire. & etc..

It's been years since I changed a tire. Today, now that the temps have dropped recently, I had to put air in my tires. I'm not used to squatting down these days. I was a little slow to straighten up.

Interesting that a post about vocabulary is incorrectly titled. It should read "Americans' Poor..." not "Americans Poor..."

Reminds me of the time an employee stated on a self-evaluation that "grammer" was one of his strengths. Then again, he did not list "spelling."

Thanks! I fixed it.

AAA has people in trucks that will do that for you.

I know. I have been a member since I was a teenager. And I have used their assistance.

One of things my father taught me was let the insurance company handle it. None of going to get three estimates from repair companies.

Several years ago I was in a fender bender; my fault. I immediately notified my insurance. However the other guy wanted more than my insurance company was willing to pay. He took me to Small Claims Court. Ultimately the judge awarded him less than what my insurance company had offered him.

I think about that every time I rent a car. When I look at the wheels, I realize I have no idea how to release the covers to get to the lugnuts. I would have no choice but to wait for the roadside assistance.
