So for you muscle guys out there with personal training as your day job/side hustle, how do you feel about the occasional strictly-business workout with a client who is also your, um, client? Just arranged a training session (at PT rates) with a regular provider, and loved the experience: he knows his stuff, and challenged me in ways my usual workout partner doesn’t. (No, not like that. Well, yes, like that, but not in the gym), I didn’t have any problem focusing our relationship in a different way professionally, and I’d like to repeat, but don’t want it to get weird for the provider.

I don't see that there's anything inappropriate. He provides multiple services....and you're taking advantage of that. So long as it's clear which services you're expecting at any given appointment, there's nothing wrong with asking him.

He may or may not want to have that kind of "dual relationship" on the long-term.....but it might be worthwhile in the short-term, at least.

Would you feel the same if he were a plumber?

It's a job. (Actually the escorting is too).

Of course. Personal training and escorting are perfectly valid, useful lines of work, both of them—and I mean that. But anything involving sex can potentially get awkward, in a way that doesn’t really apply to plumbers (outside of porn scenarios, I mean). Thus my question.

But the physical part of personal training probably makes it more awkward than if he were also a plumber working for you or an auto mechanic. Just like those jobs, to him it's just a job while to you it may seem related to escorting in personal training because it's physical with some body contact.

My point exactly. And there are all kinds of ways this might go south, theoretically. I could get inappropriately attached, which would be awkward for both of us; in the workout he could treat me like an escort client (flatter me, make me feel good about myself) instead of a PT client (push me, challenge me physically), which would frustrate me and make me feel condescended to. I don’t think these are serious risks in this particular case, but there you are.

Interesting. Obviously you know your particular and unique situation better, but i might think a way it could "go south" is if he potentially thought during the PT workouts that an escort client may start acting inappropriately forgetting for example they're in a public gym and it's not flirty and play time versus being serious about the training.

Well, he’s a regular — we’re pretty well acquainted, and by this time he knows (or I hope he knows) that I’m a) discreet, and b) very, very serious about fitness. Our one workout together so far was at his neighborhood gym, and our interaction was I think friendly but professional. FWIW, I already have a trainer that I’ve been with for years, so I don’t plan on hiring my other guy on any regular basis. But I found it a fun experience, and I hope he’ll feel comfortable repeating it occasionally.

Ironically, part of the fun (for both of us, I think) is playing our respective professional roles—serious fitness-minded. client and dedicated no-nonsense trainer—to perfection in the gym, all the while knowing that we’ll be indulging in a certain amount of raucous filthy UNprofessional behavior afterwards ...
