Quick question: Exactly how would any of these countries know you are gay? Looking in the mirror after jumping out of the shower I didn't see the word "GAY" displayed anywhere on my body. Neither my passport, Global Entry card, nor drivers' license read "HOMOSEXUAL." My glasses don't flash "GAY GAY GAY" and when ordering at the coffee shop I said "a regular drip coffee, please" and not "I take rock hard cock up my ass."

I'm not sure I agree that those are the 10 most hating countries, though certainly Iran, Uganda, and Jamaica are near the top. This is a map of how gay relationships treated by law in the world. The blue shades indicate that there is either gay marriage or registered domestic partnership in the country. Dark brown has a death penalty for gays, and I would not visit any of those countries. Bright orange is up to life in prison, and I have to say I have visited India, and, very briefly, Zambia (just to see Victoria Falls from that side: I was there only a few hours). I have been to some amber-colored countries (Imprisonment possible, sometimes enforced): Egypt, Morocco, Zimbabwe, but I'm very cautious in those countries. I don't think I'd ever hire in an orange or amber country. Yellow refers to unenforced laws, and beige refers only to limited freedom of expression and/or association. Wouldn't live in those places, but visiting OK. Gray means gay relationships are neither recognized nor illegal.

Pure racist hate garbage. Why do people fall for this?

Iran, Turkey and Afganistan worst three?? Homosexuality is a way of life in all three. To protect the virginity of the girls. There's no shortage of gay Iranians or Turks and Afganistan has the tradition of "Boy-Play" where high officials and generals keep male slaves for sex. Iran pays for sex-change operations. And any Turkish miltary barracks has more gay sex on any night than any bathhouse (there are many of those in Turkey too). Yes, it's technically illegal because they're religious states and it's a major widespread "problem". I've only been to Turkey but several bathhouses there were on a MassuerFinder level of activity. And middle-eastern cocks are usually enormous with a large base and taper.

Homosexual acts were illegal until 2003 in much of the US with severe sentences. For the younger ones, let me assure you, there was plenty of gay sex in the US before 2003.

I don't have to be there to know that homosexuality is illegal or can be punished by death penalty in a lot of these Middle East and North African countries. I also don't think spending a few days in these countries as a tourist would make anyone an expert in what gay people are going through in those places.

Fine. How about ten days in Bosnia, a country with a significant Muslum population?

A popular line I have heard many, many times by U.S. adults for many decades, my deceased mother among them, is "I am not concerned so much about what gays do behind closed doors. I just don't want to see them flaunting it." Basically "flaunting" means displaying any kind of affection resembling "heteronormal" behavior like kissing and holding hands that dominates popular culture in this country. I guess the same applies in other countries that have certain laws. However, it is important to note that these same countries that are viewed anti-gay also tend to be very strict about what even heterosexuals are allowed to do in public places.

I’ll be spending over 6 weeks in the gray countries of Eastern Europe, including Bosnia. Being discreet is the key. I certainly wouldn’t flaunt it. And the Muslims of Bosnia are more culturally Muslim than overtly pious. They drink. I think you’ll be fine.

Sorry. I should have been clearer. I visited Bosnia about five years ago, especially Mostar.

Countries "hating gay people" is somewhat akin to areas in the US "hating gay people." I lived at one point in a county deep in the heart of redneck Appalachia and, if you publicly flaunted your gayness, you would be beat up and probably have gunshots through your windows at night. However, I can most definitely tell you that there was a helluva lot of gay shit going on between rednecks down in the "hollers" and backroads that most everybody knew about but nobody talked about. There's just as many gay people in Iran, Nigeria, Singapore, and Harlan County, Kentucky, as there is in most other areas of the US (not counting gay meccas like NYC and SF) - they just don't talk about it openly. I have a friend who visited Egypt not many years ago who said the level of "down low" gay opportunities in Cairo (including bell hops, taxi drivers, waiters) was amazing. Just had to be careful about flaunting it.

Unless you make it obvious, like draping yourself in a pride flag or have a pronounced lisp, no one in any of these countries is going to know you're gay. I don't see the point in scaring gay people into not visiting certain places on holiday. Sexual orientation isn't like race, no one knows you're gay unless you want them to.

Interesting thread. Living in a country is different than traveling to a country. I’ve traveled to many of the countries listed in the article. I’ve also lived in one of the countries for two years (Iran-pre Khoemeni) and would NEVER have lived as an openly gay man. I also lived in Kenya (next door to Uganda and for all practical purposes the same as Uganda) for two years and kept my homosexuality to myself. Don’t kid yourself...the vast majority of Africa would just as soon you didn’t exist.

Traveling to the countries on this top-10 list normally don’t present problems. You’re a tourist for a short period of time, spend some money in the country and take a few photos. No problems. Try hooking up with the wrong guy in any of these countries and you’re taking your future and your security into your own hands.

Exactly. Most important: Be a smart, aware traveler.

Don't let your dick get you in trouble, but also don't let politics sway you from seeing new places.

It's no big secret that the rest of the world can function very differently than the United States. If someone is uncomfortable with that fact, it's probably best they stay put.

Also be honest with yourself!

I know some folks who say they're in the closet... and the purse can't stop coming out of their mouths, they're gay a block away...

Some folks can't help it...

There was a thread about a well-known poster about an escort who refused to go out to have dinner with him. The escort was a gay man in the closet and been seeing with THAT client would take him out of it...

A version of what you're saying makes sense to me, which is, if you're very openly gay... Choose your travel with care. Don't make things tougher on yourself if you don't have to.

If you're unable to play the game for a little while and butch it up a bit, it's probably best you don't visit some of the places mentioned.

I wish we spent more time looking at ourselves instead of using others' flaws to feel better about our own shit.
That's the American way and the reason we have the president we have. It's the motto of the Republican party. Now if we could just stop all those damn immigrants all you Redneck Republicans who voted for me would prosper beyond your wildest dreams. You will get a bigger slice of the welfare pie and won't have think about how YOU contributed to your lot in life.

It is not only the Republican Party and it is not only the American way.

If you participate long enough in this forum, you will se how Liberals and rational Conservatives jump over whoever dares to criticize America to show you examples of how much worse and how much eviler other nations are.

And if you live long enough in any other country you will see the same defense mechanism. It is the stupid nationalism/patriotism that has all of us stuck in a Tribal mindset.
