I do. But only after I have first searched Company of Men for details on a provider. If I don't find enough detail,  I send two or three recent RM reviewers RM messages asking about the guy they have reviewed and whom I'm thinking of hiring.
 
I keep my requests simple, saying something like "I see you enjoyed your time with ____ last month and I'm thinking of meeting him. I'd be grateful for any details you're willing to share."
I never ask reviewers about rates.  I only ask providers directly about rates.
And I find that typically 1 out of 3 RM reviewers respond to me, and I think that's a great response rate. Their responses vary in detail, and some are much more helpful to making my hiring decision than others, but nevertheless I always thank responders for taking the time to help me.
About 1 out of 8 RM reviewers open a more expansive discussion with me.

It has been quite helpful to understand different perspectives on how people might view companionship. It definitely differs based on experience, personal needs, background, culture, and economic situation.

Time is paid unless explicitly stated otherwise. Off-the-clock time is a gift, not a right. Clarity and communication preserves dignity on both sides.
It is a sensitive topic as it sits at the intersection of money, desire, ego, fantasy, and emotional labor. Neither side wants to feel used, misunderstood, or devalued.

I do agree that this is a bit of a controversial topic that seems to differ in preferences. 
There are also lines in the relationship that can get blurred quite easily and very quickly. One sided lines where emotions get intertwined between the client and the provider. Expectations shift, and its complex to walk back into what it was before.
There are times where it is mentioned about meeting off the clock, which is fine, as long as it is told. Other times, it is not mentioned whatsoever. When it is not mentioned, thats when expectations arise, miscommunications happen and one party gets upset.
Why does this seem like such a sensitive topic to some though?

If it's a mutual like then the provider might see it differently but at times the like is more "one-sided".  By that I mean the client feels something while the provider doesn't.  It's part of the job of the provider to make each client feel special.  If it's something that you'd expect that the provider doesn't charge their regular rate then before arranging something make sure you talk with the provider and make that known.  The provider could be fine with it or want to keep it strictly business, meaning they still charge the rate for their time.  It shouldn't be off-putting rather it gives you the answer you are looking for, move onto the next provider.

I’ve seen him many times both at my home and at hotels. He’s the most honest guy in the biz. His post a while back about getting his gear stolen and subsequently taking a break from escorting was disheartening on many levels.

As far as identity if you aren't using face pictures it will help with identity issues.  At the same time clients can and will ask for a face picture before meeting.  While you can let them know not to share it once you share the picture with them you have no control over where that picture shows up.  As far as career opportunities just be smart, don't attach your real name to any photos, etc...  

There are many other risks beyond those that come with escorting such as keeping yourself protected from potential STD and meeting with clients who could potentially be crazy and try to harm you.  Make sure you screen and get an idea so you know who you are meeting with.
