  1. That's too cruel and catty for me to "Like" but I do appreciate the (slightly malicious) cleverness of it.
  2. willing to say what city, or does it matter?
  3. Kinda makes me think of what you'd get if you genetically melded Bravehart with a native American brave.
  4. I thought of a new button for the forum. X, Y, and Z Cringe at this. (nothing personal. I'm a fan of our esteemed Adam Smith.)
  5. Where's that triple-like button ?
  6. Technically speaking, one "flop" is one floating point operation. (Doing math calculations with approximate real numbers). Logical decisions are a different kind of operation. The high counts for "flops" are usually due to smart video cards, which have special purpose processors just for doing arithmetic fast so they can spin or distort objects being represented visually. I know, y'all didn't ask, but the pedant in me couldn't resist.
  7. Somebody came to bury the hatchet right under the Marc, Eh?
  8. The difference between a dressmaker and a Baroque Trumpeter? The dressmaker tucks up frills . . . .
  9. Well, if you're willing to settle for entertaining may I suggest:
  10. In a minor way; it get's the prius out of his queue and him onto the freeway one car sooner . . .
  11. I regret to admit that it was QTR's groan that made me comprehend the reference . . . (3213213213213217652).
  12. Caveat - Long post about my stuff, stinginess: $2.069 for regular at the Arco at 52nd & Shattuck North Oakland *California* yesterday. Though a goodly fraction more expensive than the rest of the country, the cheapest I've seen that was easily obtainable in a long time. I had a bottom of the line acura integra that I drove for 12 years and 140,000 miles. Somebody stole and stripped out the radiator, generator some of the interior stuff and CSAA deemed it "uneconomical to repair" and cashed it out for $4,000, about 4 years ago. (I was surprised that they considered it worth that much, but certainly wasn't going to argue with them.) So I bought a bottom of the line Honda Insight - (a sort of imitation Prius). At the time, gas was going for around $4/gallon. And I did the math (assuming $4/gallon, 40 miles to the gallon for an Insight and 50 miles to the gallon for a real Prius) and determined that the extra cost of the hybrid stuff over a comparable Honda Fit would be made up by driving the car 60,000 miles. I was hoping to get 200,000 out of it. The bottom-of-the-line actual full sized Prius was about $6,000 more than the Insight. In order to make up that difference, I would have had to drive a Prius 300,000. With gas going at $2 a gallon, it doubles the distances. (Although having already driven about 25,000 miles before prices began to plummet, I only need to drive about 90K more to break even). The Insight is totally gutless going up hills. Definitely best for the flats. The other thing that surprised me is that my insurance *dropped* after buying a more expensive new car, than keeping the old one. The insurance agent said that drivers of Insights were less likely to get into accidents, and that the repair parts were cheaper. (Honda v.s. Acura, even though the same corporation).
  13. So, Epigonos' father was born ~1900. I won't particularly make me feel that much older if his father married or at least had children much later in life. My great-grandfather married the 17-year old daughter of a close friend when he was 42, and my grandfather's older brother was born about a year and half later in 1883. My aunt says that her grandmother was *eager* to get out of the household and not have to take care of her siblings. I vividly remember my great-uncle Joe and him talking about riding in Stage coaches and so not having any desire to sit in one with me when we visited the museum at the palace of the governor's in Santa Fe (when I was a kid). I only found out about 15 years ago that I wasn't the first person in my family to attend that public university on (near) the west coast, and recently looked up his transcript from 1900-1902. (He didn't graduate because he was called back to work in the family-run hotel). That doesn't make me feel older, but maybe a little prouder to be a third generation westerner. Plus, my grades were better than my granduncles
  14. Apologies, I thought I had mentioned enough times living in the SF Bay Area that people would have understood that was Oakland CA. The photo you shared of Oakland MD was quite really quite picturesque; thank you
  15. Well, obviously, I can't speak for QTR, but I can relate a somewhat parallel situation. Back in late may of 2011 (I think), my acura (bottom-of-the-line) integra was stolen, and a few days later, I was told the car had been found in Oakland with enough stuff missing from the engine compartment that it was not drivable. (And was subsquently totalled). Nonetheless, the Oakland police department had issued a citation for it being parked in a red zone, and I was responsible for the towing charges. The City of Oakland was gracious enough to dismiss the parking violation without my having to appear in court, unlike QTR's experience. [Does anybody remember when the really bad quake hit japan where the Tsunami wiped out a nuclear reactor? It stopped the importation of honda insights for about 6 months, and I snagged the last base model available in SF memorial day weekend of that year]. [ I "liked" her posting because I'm glad she wasn't injured]
  16. The thought of that is so "icky" that I can't bring myself to like the entire post (including quotes that the message board doesn't seem to let me recursively quote), but I did laugh out loud and applaud the exchange.
  17. Can I ask for a date with the Goateed Fireman in the Sausage Party?
  18. The list daddy provided isn't entirely up to date. It says Leonard Nimoy is still among the living, for example.
  19. Do textbooks count? I'm taking a music history class (20th century music) for which the main textbook is a "Music of the 20th Century Style & Structure" by Bryan R. Simms 434pp used paperback - $135. I also have an incomplete to make up from a previous class, so I have Thayer's "The life of Beethoven", "Bethoven's Chamber Music in Context" and a master's thesis from NYU about Beethovens wind chamber music. (All from university libraries).
  20. My object all sublime, I shall achieve in time , to make the punishment fit the crime, the punishment fit the crime . . .
  21. He has a profile on recon using something other than Dirk Caber as his name, but in his recon profile he acknowledges being Dirk Caber (and gives his website). The Tuba is not a prop. (His words).
  22. I believe the bearded-non-bound fellow in this picture goes by the porn name of "Sebastian Keys", and a certain escort who's done work with the kink.com company told me that Keys identifies as straight, has a girlfriend who knows about and supportive of his porn job, and when acting as a director is more fun to work with than Darkholm. You could have knocked me over with a feather after hearing that! Gotta say, he's one helluva convincing actor !!!
