I've never had a problem.  PV is very touristy.  Locals know tourists are their bread and butter.  

Mid January is a perfect time to go!  It's the middle of their high season.  Weather is nice.  Plus, you get to escape cold North American winters.
Anywhere close to Zona Romantica and by the beach will be great for convenient location, whether it's gay or not.
I actually stay at Los Tules which is a few miles north of the action, but only a $4-$5 Uber ride away.  I stay there because I can exchange my timeshare for a week there.  If you want a relaxing non-gay resort with large pools and uncrowded beach access, then almost any resort on the beach south of the airport will provide what you're looking for.  You can then Uber or taxi into Zona Romantica for shows, bars, and clubs in the evening.

I did. I ended up getting a CityPass and doing most of the places included in the pass. I definitely had a great time visiting the Art Institute. I spent almost a full day there. The aquarium was good for a first timer but definitely won’t be high on my list if I ever go to Chicago again. 
 
Besides that, I tried eating at different local restaurants. I’m very basic so the only alcohol I had during my visit was at the Starbucks Reserve Bar on Michigan Ave.

I had planned to book again at Indulge, however, they have no single room availability, and their prices while never low have gone up alarmingly. So, back to Canyon Club for $167 per night for a poolside room, as opposed to $338 per night at Indulge which was full up anyway. Booked 4 nights. Hope all goes well until April. Looking forward to seeing you guys.
