someone once mentioned they wished they had an aunt like Bette Davis... when I asked why they responded "... because she would have taught me how to sit properly on a bar stool and sip martini's for hours..."

Between us, my husband and I are uncles to a large number of nephews and nieces, and it's been a real joy to be in their lives. One of our nephews is gay, came out to us when he was 16, has visited a number of times with his boyfriend, and chats with me regularly on skype/zoom; one of our nieces is lesbian; we've helped her through various issues through the years; and she is exceptionally close to my partner - talking with him most days... and the other dozen are at various ages, and generally we're seen as the crazy/fun/attentive uncles. I was recently reflecting on my last living uncle; and realized though I was desperate for an uncle or aunt I could really talk to -- I never had one in my life, and wondered if that's why we've put so much effort into the next generation... was wondering if any of you had an uncle/aunt you came out to early in your life, who was very supportive, or even a gay uncle or aunt who provided an exceptional role model... or, if like me, you have nephews or nieces who have come out - and for whom you've been able to be the uncle you never had in your life....

concur. We've stayed at the Ahwahnee twice, two days first visit, five the second -- it's an amazing place to stay; very convenient to collapse in front of one of the massive fireplaces with a drink after a long day hiking. Definitely looking forward to our next visit.

Did Your Parents Give You The Talk About "The Birds And Bees"?

My Dad handed me a copy of "Everything you always wanted to know about sex ...", clearly he hadn't realized I knew where he hid copies of Playboy, Penthouse, and the odd magazine he bought in NYC... -
Many years ago my best friend (met when we were 6) lost her dad and a few months later her mom. Many months later she told me that some friends invited her to reach out if she needed, and others just did... and what helped most were the ones who just arrived, and either just quietly helped, or brought pastries/coffee and sat/listened, and repeated... and she slowly began to move forward again and looked forward to those friends showing up. She said it wasn't the words, but just the presence that helped her move forward from the grief... We used something similar with my mom when my Dad died, and with my partners step-mom when his Dad died. In all three situations just being there worked better than any words I could find.

After a year working from home due to London covid lockdown... I'm happy knowing what date it is give or take a month. Watches would just remind me I'm able to watch fractions of seconds tick past.

This is probably more romantic than horny, but a date took me to see "Choose Me" at an arts-cinema in Houston (very early '80s)... triggered a long romantic period of jazz clubs, old smokey bars, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass....

Was in the audience when this was filmed at Cadagon Hall... and a few months later during pride a few dozen members sheltered under a bridge during a passing downpour, realized the acoustics were perfect, and sang until the rain cleared...

As someone who lives in London, I'd recommend checking what you're inhaling if you think Boris Johnson is hot ?

Concur. I've traveled extensively in Asia and Europe alone, and never an issue... even met my husband this way... The only issues traveling alone were business trips in the states. Before my first solo journey, an older friend who had lived in Paris recommended that at least once in each city I should make sure I'm at least an hour away from my hotel (by public transport) and travel home during rush hour, then create a dinner by going to patisserie for bread, somewhere to get olives/meats, somewhere else for a bottle of wine - and then just have a picnic in the hotel room... he suggested that this would result in very strong positive images of what it was like to live in the city... and each time was a very positive unique experience I've remembered for decades.

What was the first thing that ever made you feel “old”?
keefer replied to + 7829V's topic in The Lounge
First time I felt old was when I realized I was invisible in various settings I used to enjoy; and that invisibility resulted in going to pubs/clubs less frequently, learning to differentiate between "friends" and people I could rely on, and learning to enjoy time with myself. -
and if I win the lottery, can I have the the sequence starting at 1:42 looping forever please

Went to the very start and spent thirty minutes working my way through each post to avoid repeating...

I think a pattern is emerging: similar to @7829V. Overachiever, perfect employee, very reserved, etc. It's taken a lifetime to realize opportunities lost since I've spent a lifetime pleasing others.

About 25 years ago worked in the music industry (synthesizers) and met a number of musicians. The most memorable were Stevie Wonder and Christopher Franke (Tangerine Dream). Stevie because he was with his tech crew, everyone was very relaxed, and we were all trying to make new keyboards work. Christopher because we sat together one morning slowly emptying a glass bottle of coke, blowing across it - sampling and then mapping to a midi keyboard. Result was identical to a very old fairground calliope. Many years later met Boy George at a charity auction - he was in good form, quite funny and very gracious.

I spent the summer of my 18th year building houses in Colorado. There was a 28-year old who worked on the concrete crew, Pete whose nickname was keef or keefer. As an 18 year old I had an insatiable crush. Though nothing ever happened (he was a girl magnet) I guess I was sufficiently puppy-like that he adopted me as a younger brother for a few months. Still have fond memories holding tight on the back of a motorcycle, borrowing his skateboard and quite used denim jackets. Extremely fond memories house sitting for him when he went home to California for holidays (first time on a waterbed, and I found where he hid condoms and porn)... I lost contact with him soon after Uni, but the crush has lasted a lifetime.

The first thing? Probably when watching the BBC series Grumpy Old Men and seeing myself in much that was said... closely followed thinking the music in pubs was much too loud and couldn't they turn it down a bit as I couldn't hear anyone talk... -
For those interested (and who didn't check previous thread) - here's a taste of it on YouTube. For those of us in the UK (and Australia ?) - it was released on 22nd January; and the pace of the show matches the link on YouTube... For those in the US - it's exactly as @pitman says: HBO Max on 18th Feb. For those of us who lived through this the first time, it really captures the moment; extremely fast paced, and then you suddenly find yourself uncontrollably sobbing. Brought back memories of many people I loved....
