if my math is correct (backed up by this site https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/United-Kingdom/gasoline_prices ) in London we've been above $7/gallon for most of the year.

After two years being home with boyf and his mum, and just starting commuting??? *everything* makes me horny...

@mike carey, was puttering in the garden today (if emptying two compost bins which over-wintered, then pruning shrubs and then chipping into the the empty compost bin can be considered puttering)... and realized your puzzle likely works in higher dimensions... e.g., consider an 8x8x8 stack of childrens alphabet blocks. The question is, how many distinct cubes can be identified in that volume... I managed to confirm cubes up through 4x4x4 before attention was distracted by robins stealing my earthworms... But fairly certain it works... I'll leave it as trivial exercise for you to prove the 4th and higher dimensions 😇

absolutely love this one

pardon the pun, but that should be the sum of the squares from 1 to 8: 1+4+9+16+25+36+49+64 = 204

You’ve left out inversion boots 😇

About two years ago I replaced an old Phillips/sonic-care with a Waterpik (Water Flosser)... I loved the old Philips, but when I couldn't find a replacement went with the Waterpik. I've had it for two years and it's incredible, massive difference in oral hygiene, I just can't imagine not using it after brushing. Have just returned from my first post-pandemic checkup, and three areas that were always of concern are no longer an issue... Given I was so slow learning about this tool I'm wondering what recommendations others might have??

Once, during the pandemic, we managed 15 mph through central London... but it was exceptional circumstances - no tourists and a bit of a tail wind...

As a bear who has spent covid as if preparing for hibernation, I most certainly have his arse... but it's quite stealthily hidden and hopefully will re-emerge one day 😉

May 25th at 12-noon EST... haven't decided if it's going to be @Merboy or @JoeMendoza who will submit the 2-millionth post

@Antonio1981, are you starting to feel more in control?
-
I've read/reread the original post; read/reread most of the responses; this is my third attempt at responding. @Antonio1981, your post is one my partner could have written five years ago after stepping into a role second to the chief exec with similar number of resources and direct reports. HIs father, feeling unwell, went to the emergency room - was being seen by a cardiologist when he had a massive heart attack, his third. Within minutes he was in ICU, remained in ICU, in a coma, for six weeks before they were able to take him off support and get him to cardiology ward. It was a miracle he survived, and even more a miracle that he was able to return home three months later. Our lives changed dramatically; doing 60-mile round trips nightly, living at the hospital days at a time; a pattern that continued for months. Six months after the event my partner was having same struggles and doubts that you've expressed, as well as going from fully confident to being overwhelmed. The only difference in the story is that he had a quarterly session with an executive mentor/coach. Her background was psychology/psychiatry - specialist in boardroom/executive dynamics. At their next meeting she flagged something we had missed and arranged a session with a grief counselor. This isn't my area of expertise - but the similarities are striking; in our situation the elephant in the room was grief; talking to the counselor (weekly hour long meeting that went on for six or eight weeks) - was probably the best thing we did. It was the elephant in the room, and she helped immensely helping him understand why he was overwhelmed and how to process and complete the grieving. I don't want to repeat any of the other great advice others have offered, but just want to suggest - possibly having an initial session with a grief counselor? You are dealing with much more than my partner did: your Dad, your Mom, your brother; while still carrying the world on your shoulders. Hope this helps a little; please reach out privately if you'd like to chat.

@samhexum, nah. My eccentric, oblique, impenetrable sense of humor is incapable of figuring out a pun on Foyles... London is still full of independent and semi-independent booksellers... when I first moved to London (almost 30 years ago), I fell in love with the massive old rabbit warren known as Foyles. It was still housed in the old warehouse on Charing Cross Road, and one could literally get lost in the twisty maze of miles of bookshelves snaking through the building. They bought and moved into an equally large derelict art college just next door, and the remodel kept the miles of bookshelves, but managed to unwind the hand-built maze of bookshelves. Though now owned by Waterstones (also a wonderful shop), its still a treat to spend a rainy Sunday browsing the shelves... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foyles

@Oliver, I almost lost hope that anyone would get the pun...

not sure I like what I'm about to suggest -- it sounds like the bland opaque results you'd get from a committee searching for a bland opaque rebrand using corporate speak.... contiguity noun, plural con·ti·gu·i·ties. the state of being contiguous; contact or proximity. a series of things in continuous connection; a continuous mass or extent.

found while searching for forum synonyms: Agora (in ancient Greece) a public open space used for assemblies and markets.

They bought, renovated, and moved into the old/adjacent arts college six or seven years ago. Still an incredible bookstore, but I'm still nostalgic for the old building, especially when it was still run by the founders daughter (Christina Foyle?) in the late '90s. It was everything a book lover wanted a bookshop to be.

@Charlie, @rn901, @E.T.Bass, I can't thank you enough for these recommendations - after spending time browsing Amazon, looking at ones @Charlie recommended, I decided a much better approach was to visit my favorite quasi-independent bookstore in London, and actually touch the books and see if I get lost reading a few pages, as it'll also introduce me to new shelves I've not visited or haven't visited in a while. Will spend a few hours tomorrow lost in Foyles (Charing Cross Road)... may also use it as an excuse to wander down Compton Street for further browsing. Thank you!
