  1. a subscription to HBO includes HBOMax but you must use a device (smart tv, Roku, computer etc) that has a HBO Max app. to sign in with your same name and password.(the add on for Hulu says HBO Max but is really just HBO) . Hulu has 7 days trial and it's HBO Max add-on has 7 days free, but you have to use a device to really get Max. Shame HBO Max is the best streamer because it's a mess.
  2. I thought it was "good", as in average acting and directing with a fairly predictable story but an interesting piece for gay men. Why are so many gay stories centered around a straight woman with only gay friends?
  3. Great news for those who are out of binge-worthy shows after a year of lockdown... Steven Soderbergh's critically-acclaimed 20-hour The Knick that was originally made to revive HBO's Cinemax (it didn't) has finally made it to both HBO and HBO Max. About a famous hospital in NYC in 1900, the scripts, acting and directing are 1st class. It does make a point of showing in bloody detail surgical procedures a lot so be prepared. (i keep my finger on ff). Otherwise it's based on "the father of modern surgery" William Stewart Halsted who discovered cocaine as an anesthesia, became addicted to it, and, as was the practice, was gotten off of it with heroin. WIRED Story Today Rolling Stone has a big story celebrating the wonderful show's finally escaping the quagmire of corporate media reorganization. The Knick is among the most visually striking series ever produced in America, with Soderbergh — serving, as usual, as his own cinematographer and editor — using handheld cameras and shooting everything with natural light. Episodes could have huge spectacle, like a story about the Knick’s doctors trying to escape a race riot, or be unbearably intimate, like an episode where Thackeray goes through withdrawal during a national cocaine shortage(*). And each episode could be unspeakably gory, as the cutting-edge medicine of the year 1900 looked like a second cousin to barbarism by 2015. ROLLING STONE REVIEW
  4. with the new almost-obligatory phrase: "covid tested and immune"
  5. my birthday, including the year, in public. not only is it extremely rude but it poses security and privacy concerns as someone with your name and complete birthday can access all sorts of records.
  6. the most-loved guys with extra pounds are in the UK.
  7. Unfortunately, I never recommend them for anything other than software. I also got some masks on Newegg, which somehow became two orders with a PITA return procedure (which I may not have gotten credit for from what I hear of NE), and the masks took over a month to arrive. They showed "in stock" when I ordered but "awaiting stock" after I paid on order status. The card with the VPN codes took about a week. Monoprice is better for stuff other than software. I suspect Bezos runs Newegg to make Amazon look good.
  8. for rock-bottom prices on vpn's, security etc, Newegg can be incredibly low on some products. (even though I wouldn't normally buy from them for hardware). I recently got AVG VPN for 5 machines for $10 for a year (other places $100). They usually sell physical cards with activation codes on them.
  9. Dune will be free on the day it's released in theaters on HBOMax.
  10. I've gotten rid of both my "fine" tv's this past year and switched to 4K smart tv's. The cost vs. feature balance is off-the-board in favor of switching now. Netflix and Amazon have tons of amazing 4K etc shows too. Almost like the step up from black-and-white to color in many shows and so much cheaper and easier. If you like the picture on your present tv , then assuming it has an HDMI input, you can add a Roku, or Firestick pretty cheaply ($25?) to get more apps including HBOMax.
  11. I accept the depressing aspects of older life , it's the character's choice at the end not to accept a wonderful arrangement with the beautiful family of a man she likes as even a home base but to continue basically being homeless (or "houseless"). I saw Bliss a couple weeks ago which is also about voluntary homelessness, abeit drug-induced. So many people have no real desirable options I hate for homelessness to be thought of as a "lifestyle choice".
  12. so long as you have decent speed internet & wifi you're fine. your smart tv or roku or fire stick sign in to it and give you all the apps- Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Disney, HBO Max etc. You choose which to subscribe to. you would know if you have a smart tv because it would have Netflix and Prime buttons on the remote and would open on a screen with a number of apps to choose from. most tvs sold in the last 3-4 years are smart tvs. much cheaper and much better than older tvs. and 4K HDR pictures can be stunning.
  13. The Bourbon St Pub on mid DuVal. Big place attached to the Orleans House gay hotel and it's infamous nude outdoor pool.
  14. Where did you see Minari? I hate that they pigeonholed it as a "Foreign Language" film for the Oscars even though it's American. I thought Nomadland was a little depressing..https://www.companyofmen.org/threads/nomadland-free-from-2-19.163201/ Francis McDormand has a nice job. Be a contender for best actress in a big-budget movie by remaining absolutely stoic in all situations and showing absolutely zero emotion. Strange Hulu got the rights.
  15. 100% public nudity is not allowed in Florida but "private encounters" in a cabin with a "dancer" are legal. Go figure. Ft Lauderdale is open just fine with some masks and LeBoy, Johnson's and Boardwalk are well documented here and everywhere. What's more of an info jungle is the rest of Florida. Example Tampa Bay/St Pete/Clearwater have numerous gay bars with varying degree of strippers but little to no info. Ditto Daytona and Orlando. Key West has a big gay strip club with privates.
  16. Indeed, @liubit and I have pretty much the same group of friends in Czech and he lived there when I first started visiting. @liubit is my Czech expert.
  17. A Roku stick or Fire stick is a small attachment you put on an HDMI port on your tv. (If you have a smart tv Roku, Fire or Android tv may be built in). The stick has it's own remote control to work it. In effect it's a mini-computer that receives channels over your wifi. They have apps including true HBO Max. They are cheap- $20 to $90. However, if you do not have a smart tv you really should get one asap. They are ridiculously cheap and outrageously better. 4K, HDR color, Dolby Vision, etc. I paid $100 for a 43 inch one for my quest room that has some features (like Android tv) my new $2000 living room tv doesn't have. New tv's are also extremely thin and lightweight and use very little electricity. Broadcast and cable tv are pretty much obsolete and smart tv's are today's "tv's". You'll never miss RCN or cable.
  18. balmer ?
  19. No, it's more complicated HBO on Amazon Prime's app is just HBO and you have to get an HBO Max app on something else, a Firestick, or a RoKu or a computer to also get HBO Max movies. You sign on for free to the HBO Max app with your Amazon name and password. Everything on HBO is on HBO Max but nothing vice-versa. Except- What is labeled an HBO Max app on Hulu is really just a bunch of regular HBO movies listed at random with no search feature. No HBO Max movies. 4K HD but worse than the Amazon HBO app. You can try it free for a week. All the really good new stuff is on HBO Max only like all the new-in-theater Warner movies and series like Flight Attendant. So far I have to watch all those new releases on my computer in SD as Windows is the only real HBO Max app I have. I thought Hulu would be a work-around on my tv, it's not. Ultimately, it's best to get a RoKu or Firestick that has the Max App if your tv isn't Android or RoKu TV, because HBO gives you a 20% discount for a 6-month subscription directly through them, unlike Amazon, Hulu, or a cable company and I'm tired of waiting for real HBO Max directly on Hulu or Amazon. (Maybe that's the point of this mess?). There's whole reddits on trying to figure this Max mess out. I still think HBO (Max) is the best streamer, especially with the 20% off deal.
  20. We watched it on Christmas along with Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (a Black Christmas). Both excellent. Both about jazz and becoming stars (or not).
  21. Do you mean extra pube, hair, and girth? Or does he attract women into pubic hair?
  22. If Whataburgers stayed open what are Texans complaining about? Rest of us don't even have one.
  23. In years BAC (before air conditioning) it was normal for men to be at home in boxer shorts (the flys had snaps for that reason). Briefs fucked that up eventually. Slips were not uncommon for women but thin cotton dresses were more common. My dad would go naked around the house for a long time before taking a bath or after. Mom would only get mad if he came in the kitchen like that. Otherwise, absent daughters, it was a man's prerogative.
  24. Watched it and it's different. Sort of a cinema verite/documentary feel. About older poor people who prefer to live in vans. As she tells someone "I'm not homeless, just houseless". A little depressing in that the nomad lifestyle draws some away from security (like the star who refuses a wonderful option at the end). Not that any options for last days are great.
