Then ask in the first text: replace the proposed time and dates with a question about the fee.

It's not that they take a long time, it's that the IRS usually gives people an opportunity to make good before taking extreme actions. I had a client once who didn't file taxes for nearly a decade even though her husband was operating a sole-proprietorship as a trucker. She received numerous letters and phone calls and ignored all of them. It was only when the IRS began garnishing her income that she came in to see me to fix everything. She told me she thought didn't have to file anymore because she was over 65. To compound the bad news, based on her husband income and expenses, she could have received refunds for a couple of the years if had she filed in time but those returns had passed the 3 year limit to claim a refund.

I think he missed his calling as a public relations mogul.....

I have a doctor who gave me his personal cell so I can reach any time I need something. This was after I ended up the hospital after an emergency room visit a number of years ago. We were told he had been contacted that I was going to be admitted (this was around Independence Day). I spent two days in the care of med students (dumb as bricks) never being seen by an attending nor my doc. If not for him showing up on the floor two days later and noticing my name on the board, who knows how long it would have gone on. And this was with me constantly being assured my doctor knew I was in the hospital since I constantly asked why he hadn't come by or at least called. The entire floor could hear him screaming at everyone working at the time.
 
Never, and I mean never, go to the hospital in June or July. Med students usually start then and you don't want to risk your life.

I know the bigger reason was just as you said, I am a good accountant. When I had to stop working due to circumstances that had zero to do with company and beyond my control, I know the company lost at least 30% of my clients of who were only staying with them because of me.
 
I agree with you that we shouldn't penalize people for not sending a thank you whatever just like we shouldn't penalize clients for not tipping.

Maybe they come back because you are a good accountant. My point would be we shouldn't penalize an accountant or an escort/masseur just because they didn't send a thank you note/text/email/call. It's the quality of their work that should get us to use their services again.

When I was tax accountant, I would send thank you emails if a client gave me their email address. All my clients would get a card in January again thanking them for coming in the prior year and telling them I was looking forward to seeing them again. I usually had a >90% retention rate. Must have been doing something right.

If that's true, it would never work with me. I have an obsession with checking my watch/clock multiple times an hour (a habit I developed as kid) so I always know the approx. time. I don't think I'd glance at the clock when I walk into the room, but I am sure I would see it at some point and know i it's off.
