At the risk of being controversial. What year was that in? Was there any public gay community at the time? It's (relatively) easy today for gay high school students to be out and have boyfriends or at the very least to see their identity reflected positively in the media. The day of any role for an older adult to be a "mentor" in that mythical Greek way is long time gone. It sounds like you considered that a positive thing for yourself - and don't recommend it for others - and it's also a role (I think) that's on the ash heap of history.

In Canada people in Newfoundland (one of the poorer provinces) has the highest rate of charitable giving according to Revenue Canada. I think there is something to empathy and knowing something about other peoples' situation that can lead to charity (which is what tipping is). Maybe Canada is different, the numbers of smokers are down to 10-12% of the population. And heavily skewed to not the poor, but the extremely poor. Going out to dinner is a food line-up for a huge chunk of our smokers.

An on-going theme I've run across in my short time on here is older guys complaining about not being considered sexually while not being interested in guys their own age or older.
