These references have much less to do with getting old and much more to do with people being uninformed. If a person or work of art is or was significant, a reasonably-informed person should know. The Mona Lisa, Gone With the Wind, Lauren Bacall, World War 2, Julius Caesar, Tennessee Williams, and Nina Simone were all before my time. Nevertheless, as a child I knew who and what the fuck they were, because I was a curious person. Didn't have time to review this thread, but on the subject of professional critics, I read them because they aren't normal people, because they know the history and context of their field be it travel, film, books, theater, or fine art. If I find a few critics whose insights and writings I admire, I don't mind if I disagree with them, occasionally, because I appreciate the thought they put into the review.
