I'd go back to my teen years when I was securely hidden in the closet and I'd be brave enough to come out and have my first gay teen romance -- something so many of us missed out on in high school -- with that boy I crushed so secretly over: Leif Garrett. (I'm pretty sure I could have him now for free but would pass; fame and time have been unkind to him.) But in 1977, my heart melted when I saw him on TV or the cover of my sister's Teen Beat. ... I'd give 16-year-old me that thrill.

I totally understand that going back to the mid-80s there will have been the horrible crisis that existed at that time.  1985 (the year I was born) was a very very hard year for gay men because of that damn plague that took so many wonderful lives.  I often wonder, in the same hospital I was born, was there a gay man dying of AIDS in another part of it at the same time... the answer is probably sadly yes.
I think we'd all wish of course wish for a world where HIV/AIDS never happened.

I’m a realist. 1985 was a time when AIDs was spreading silently in the gay community in North America and Europe . I was living in Europe but visited the US frequently. It wasn’t a time to be promiscuous unfortunately and many of those who were soon disappeared from the scene. I lived through that and wouldn’t want to go back there.

Adjusted for inflation, a billion in 1985 is almost $2.9 billion today, which means I could rent three stadiums, double the auditions, and still have cash left over for matching silk robes and commemorative towels.

A billion? I’m going back to the ’80s, renting a stadium, and holding open auditions… clothes optional. For that much money, I expect an encore, a standing ovation, and maybe a pulled hamstring or two.
