  1. Today is again October 11th, National Coming Out Day. A surprise is that Superman's son, Jonathan Kent, has come out of the closet and will be an openly gay superhero! https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/11/arts/superman-comes-out.html From the Times article... "The coming out of Superman, perhaps the most archetypal American superhero, is a notable moment even in an age when many comics have embraced diversity and are exploring pressing social issues. Batman’s sidekick, Robin, recently acknowledged romantic feelings for a male friend (not Dick Grayson — who was Batman’s partner for over four decades — but Tim Drake, a later replacement; there are multiple Robins just as there are multiple Supermen). And a new Aquaman comic stars a gay Black man who is positioned to become the title hero. It has been a steady evolution for an industry that had moved to censor itself in a number of ways after “Seduction of the Innocent,” a 1954 book by the psychiatrist Fredric Wertham, raised concerns about sex, gore and violence and suggested a link between reading comics and juvenile delinquency. In one section, Wertham described Batman and Robin as “a wish dream of two homosexuals living together.”

  3. The NY Times today carries the obituary for Budge Patty, a 1950's tennis champion, who has died at the age of 97. "Known for his style as much as his forehand volley, he was one of only three Americans to win the French and Wimbledon men’s singles in the same year....Patty was almost invariably described as handsome, elegant and a fashionable dresser. " I will admit that I was drawn to the article because of his early pictures: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/08/sports/tennis/budge-patty-dead.html
  4. @glutesAnd you did nothing to cause the ghosting?

If that's a recent picture @marylander1940I would say he is aging quite well.

And I actually met him, with a faithful friend, who took a picture of me with my arm around Lukas. (I also flew cross-country on a red-eye with Lukas and Johann Paulik. Boy, those were the days, sleeping with them... even if we were in different rows!)
  12. I agree that Closer was brilliant, @MikeThomas. Dave Chappelle is not homophobic or transphobic. He may have questions about things he doesn't understand, but I don't think he is a mean person. At the end of the show he told a long story about a trans woman who opened his act in San Francisco. It was very touching. Chappelle says that empathy is bisexual in that it has to go both ways. And he makes a great point about the gay community's treatment of black people. We have nothing to brag about on gay black rights and representation in our own community. Thanks, Dave, for the laughs and the tears. Closer, on Netflix now.
  13. I wasn't at that performance, but I have been at shows where she sang. She sings beautifully.
  14. Once again I have enjoyed the forums this morning. I hope I don't post too much. I know I am opinionated, but that's part of the fun, getting reactions and all.
  15. Granted it should be illegal, but enforcement is altogether another issue. It would be one person's word* against another, and it would involve discussion of pretty personal information. I don't see the law as being very effective. *Absent disease transmission which could be proven.
  16. What did you decide?
  17. You are such a harsh critic. Thankfully you are wrong a lot! (Not that I am always right!)
  18. Really, Benjamin. "Salonga’s performance as Mother” was described as “the stand-out performance of the evening.” https://entertainment.inquirer.net/81815/lea-salonga-gets-rave-review-for-ragtime
  19. The NY Times today has an article about the lesbian extravaganza, the Dinah Shore Weekend, held in Palm Springs. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/09/style/dinah-shore-weekend.html
  20. Oh, thanks. I am glad to be wrong!
  21. I have not yet watched Closer, but I plan to.
  22. The Wall Street Journal today reports that Brazil has a higher vaccination rate than the US- 72% to 64%. So I guess it is safer to be in Rio!
  23. It's a hot cartoon, but having the guy steal the wallet doesn't help!
  24. What a hideous lamp! 😄
