    Fascism (Mussolini)? Socialism (Craxi)? Certainly there weren’t any politics in the film! Just because Oliver had to return to America, lock the closet door and get married to a women in order to live a life during the height of the AIDS epidemic is no reason to think that “the assumptions or principles relating to or inherent in a sphere, theory, or thing, especially when concerned with power and status in a society“ — i.e. politics — had anything to do with the sexy love story. I will never understand why some folks are terrified of the thought of art having a political dimension. Especially when CMBYN does.

    Agreed. He’s riveting. The much-discussed Michael Stuhlbarg end-speech is also wonderfully played. (I also liked Vanda Capriolo, whose Mafalda is one of those unsung small parts that gives a movie credibility.) I also enjoyed the “blue shirt” imagery at the end, which is in the book but reads, in the film, as an homage to the final, heart-wrenching scene of “Brokeback Mountain,” released two years before the book was published. The difference: Elio’s blue shirt is “out of the closet,” unlike Jack’s, which the tragic Ennis wraps around his own shirt and puts back in the trailer’s closet as a profoundly wrenching memory of life lost. Elio, by contrast, wraps Oliver’s blue shirt around himself. He’s living his life openly.

    I call Bullshit. You have no idea why he committed suicide, and pretending you do says more about you than him. Exploiting tragedy is awful.

    I’m not so sure one is “born with it.” I certainly have no deep knowledge of Stalling’s life, but there has been some indication that he was severely abused as a child — which would not be in the least surprising.

    I was at a restaurant last week with 11 other people. The waiter took all 12 of our orders without writing down a word. Everything was presented exactly right.
