The old maids usually were outstanding teachers. I had old maid teachers in 4th 5th and 6th grade and I thrived.

Well, yes, in the abstract it was a personal choice, but, in fact, at that time, not marrying was almost not an option. When I was in grade school, probably 80% of the teachers were unmarried women in late middle age - "old maids" they were called. They seemed to live nice lives. In spite of their teacher's salaries, they all drove nice cars. They hung out with each other and traveled all summer long. But I think of the things my mother used to say about them. Of course, to their faces she was never anything but polite and respectful, but she used to say that they were defective, or abnormal because they weren't married and didn't have children. And I suspect her attitude wasn't uncommon. They were outcasts - serving a worthy function as teachers, but otherwise dismissed. Unmarried men were known as "confirmed bachelors" and were also highly suspect.

That's the thing. Most gay men choose not to have children. And that comes with a price. Not having a family definitely has a price. But most come to terms with the price paid fairly easily when they realize the immense personal freedom that comes with being a childless gay man.

That was in 1990. By then, the feminist movement had matured and recognized that feminism was about women choosing and that choosing to be a housewife/stay-at-home mom was a valid choice. So she wasn't advocating anything radical that hadn't already been thought of.

She's made her share of bone-headed remarks. The one that stands out for me is when she and Poppy Bush toured a shelter in Houston during Katrina and she remarked on what an opportunity it was for all these displaced people to get to make a fresh start in Texas. The lines from the Wellsley speech are another.

Occasionally, younger men want to know what it was like living through the epidemic. They can't imagine it and they want to hear it from a veteran. I like to tell them about how quickly the landscape changed with protease inhibitors and triple-combination therapy.

I treat younger men as my contemporaries. Just today, at the gym, I talked to a young guy I have been eyeing. He is pretty beefy and is probably college-age and I first noticed him because he has a very big personality and talks kind of loud. He knows a lot about lifting and really enjoys coaching his friends. I thought it would be fun to work out with him. Today we introduced ourselves to each other and he gave me a guy hug, and I told him I would like to work out with him. He seemed really flattered and said, in his loud voice,"I'm totally down!" He spotted me on bench presses - I thanked him and said, "You're a good man" and he acted sort of "Aw shucks," and said "I really like to see people achieve their goals."

Do bruises count? I've gotten bruises from my partner clutching me in the heat of passion.

People into FF are obviously REALLY into assplay, and most are very conscientious about keeping their nails short and filed. Those into more vanilla forms of assplay can find the example instructive.

I have really high expectations of getting fucked, because once in a while, a guy makes me see stars. That doesn't happen often, though. The other times, it's OK, but nothing special. But even then, I just like having the guy inside of me.

I wouldn't identify as a top because I like it both ways. As I get older and my boners become less reliable, I default to bottoming more and more. But when I top, there's nothing more exciting than fucking a real stud man.

The monthly dues at most of the boxes around SF are up there. They are not as high as a high-end health club like the Bay Club, but they are quite a bit higher than mass-market places like 24-hour fitness and City Sports.

I"m certainly there to look at the men, but it's not my primary purpose. I stay very focused on my workout. There's an occasional gay guy at my gym, but most are straight. I have friendly relationships with a lot of them.
