  1. But, this is the fourth version of the same basic story, if you count the Janet Gaynor film. Sure significant changes were made in the three musical versions, but still!!
  2. Rock bands can sell out MSG. Very well-known classical singers. Many years ago: Sinatra; Garland. More recently: only Midler who sang and comedy. I really this is not a complete list.
  3. I wish she more time to explain her book. And there could been less concentration on Beñjamin Franklin and the Penn campus, an high tuition university.
  4. In my 20s, I would not be able to have have sex frequently with older men. Thanks, @marylander1940
  5. This was difficult to read because my best friend in high school also lost his wife at a young age. He raised his daughter and his special needs son on his own. But, his children had first cousins close by. That allowed him to explore his sexual feeling for men sooner than most. But, it was never easy, his older brother, a drunk driver, was killed driving in the wrong direction on a major highway. Two people were killed in the other car. His mother never recovered from that accident.
  6. Very Interesting, but also try Thomas Mann's The Magic Montain, which takes place in Switzerland before the First World War, a period of interest to you. Mann received a Noble Prize for Literature in 1929. Mann lived in the United States and Switzerland when Hitler came to power. I have just ordered "kingdoms of Faith" at your suggestion. Thank you so much. I am very much looking forward to reading it.
  7. Occasionally I do not even bother bringing my phone, especially at the local Starbucks which is very close to my apartment. Whoever calls can wait a hour or more for a return call.
  8. Patricia Highsmith from Strangers on a Train through her several Tom Ripley books. Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain. Currently, a new biography of Rock Hudson.
  9. There was not a lot of housing available for men and women returning from the second world war. My parents had a bedroom, as did my grandmother. I slept in either the living room or kitchen also my cousins in their houses or apartments. Just a guess as to why the sleeping arrangements were not noticed in the early days of television.
  10. I loved Jackman in the "Carousel" concert at Carnegie Hall, but less so in his one-person show on Broadway.
  11. All this is interesting for someone like me who was stationed in the United States for a year in the Army during the Vietnam war . Sex was fun during basic training, but after it was as if a 9 to 5 job - just boring. And I was much younger than the enlisted men and hated being a sex object for older men.

    Objectifying?

Yes, exactly. And the phone number for his friend in Portugal in case of an emergency is not the same as the phone numbers of his SO's siblings. Now Unicorn is helpless if something happens to his lover when they are not together.

    Objectifying?

Aren't you very concerned after knowing this man since March, you quite correctly add, "hopefully he is not acting."
  14. In old age, Lucille Ball was sometimes asked who she missed? Her answer: Hedda Hopper. Given that answer why would she lie about Hedda and her son?
  15. Thanks for posting.
  16. Wasn't William Hopper gay, @Avalon? I believe Hedda had a difficult time accepting his sexual preference.

    Objectifying?

@Unicorn I remember your posts here about previous relationships (as I mentioned above). The obvious response: I am glad you are so happy, but, given the age difference, some day he will have to take care of you, regardless of your detailed medical planning for the future. Will your lawyer be greatly involved also?

    Objectifying?

Having a lot of experience in relationships with younger men has drawbacks as well, especially if some did not end well.

    Objectifying?

I agree about the strong connection with mothers. Also, @Unicorn has written about other romantic relationships here over the years. So in Unicorn's defense, he has quite a bit of experience. I have been more than a bit critical of this relationship because of his SO's mom - a very difficult situation.
  20. I do not understand. Lucilly Ball and Mary Martin liked Hedda Hopper as a person.
  21. @Avalon I know little about Parsons except Hearst. But, some celebrated people actually liked Hedda Hopper. For better or worse, people like Parsons and Hopper no longer cover Hollywood.
  22. Thanks. I will be in New York City this weekend. Perhaps I can see a few of the films in the hotel.
  23. When Joey Stefano returned to Philadelphia for Gay Pride in the 1991 he looked fine if you only saw him from the distance, not up-close. Eighteen is just too young and he was an example for those who knew him earlier.
  24. Don't the flights begin in Hanoi, not South Vietnam. Nothing against North Vietnam. I know it has been just Vietnam for decades. But, I would want to see the many changes in and around where I spent a year in the Army in 1968-69. (and Ho Chi Minh City)
  25. Too bad those flights were not offered in the 1960s and 1970s when there were so many people from North America in Vietnam.
