"Maricón" is slightly less specific, it also means "effeminate", and it can be applied to an heterosexual man who seems to be extremely sensitive or delicate. If you have been exposed to a real life context (not Google) where "puto" means man-whore, I bend to your personal experience and I have no problem apologizing and accepting that I was wrong.
