  1. Random thing that struck me when reading about this: One patient who went to a famous, high volume surgeon said she never met the guy before or on surgery day.
  2. I agree with that.
  3. The mechanical shrinking of the stomach is only part of the effect. Apparently, the surgery also causes changes in the way the brain processes hunger, as MikeBiDude mentioned. This NYT story gives more details. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/health/bariatric-surgery.html
  4. I was thinking the same thing. The person I know barely qualified and would not have qualified at all if he/she had been 6 inches shorter.

  6. I'm not saying that mobility issues aren't a problem for many people. If that's the case for this person, I haven't heard about it or seen it.
  7. That's true for some people, but I don't think the person I am thinking of has any trouble getting around.
  8. Not sure there is a rational why. I think some people are just less easily satiated than others. For now, I eat pretty much whatever I want and have been happy with my weight. I don't know what I'll do if/when I have to choose between enjoying myself and looking good. (That said, I'm hardly the skinniest girl around here, but that look doesn't work for me anyway.)
  9. The gastric sleeve produces a significant weight loss (20% of base weight, I think), but unlike the lap band, it is irreversible.
  10. Mo Mason, you definitely wouldn't qualify. Minimum BMI to get insurance coverage is 40. Most people are happy with the results but some regret it because of the side effects. Sam.Fitzpatrick, glad it worked out for your sister even though she needed a second surgery. The problem she described is exactly what I'd be concerned about. BTW, I'm not having this done myself but someone I know is. I totally support the decision. I'm worried about the lifestyle change, but I hope it works out great.
  11. Do you know anyone who has had this surgery--the gastric sleeve in particular-- and regrets it?
  12. Wow, you guys have a much higher pain tolerance than I do.
  13. Yeah, it's a little disappointing that the porn "doctor" took a much more detailed history (before he even got to the sexual stuff) than my actual doctor did. He didn't even ask whether I smoke or drink. He did weigh me though after I reminded him. Here's the thing: The choice of in-network PCPs who are taking new patients is limited, so you can't get perfection. Given a choice between a doctor who takes a detailed history and one who pays careful attention to the info I give him, I'll take the latter. For example, he looked carefully the lab results I gave him and offered to refer me for an exam that would rule out other issues.
  14. As if. For starters, the patient shouldn't be moving around during a surgical procedure. Also, the patient can't consent while under anesthesia of any kind.
  15. I can't tell if you're joking. Were you sedated?
  16. There was another case like this recently. A doctor ejaculated on several patients while they were under anesthesia. https://patch.com/new-york/upper-east-side-nyc/mt-sinai-doctor-who-ejaculated-patient-gets-2-years-prison-reports
  17. As I said, it's hard to be sure it was even a stiffy. It was a split second, and I was focused on breathing in and out.
  18. I appreciate your looking out for me, but I truly believe it was an accident. I think the incident might have made him nervous, which may be why he forgot to weigh me or even ask my height. (Or maybe that's just because I started the visit by filling him in on my recent health problems.) This guy's office is across the street from my home. He's willing to submit referrals I request and will order labwork that I need every few months. Many of the experienced in-network physicians in that complex aren't even accepting new patients.
  19. This doctor is very nice, but he's definitely not Dr McDreamy. For all I know, it might not have been erect. I only felt it for a split second.
  20. I love how they warn that watching a porn video isn't a substitute for seeing an actual doctor.
  21. Does a nurse have to be present for a routine exam? He didn't ask me to put on a gown. He stuck the stethoscope under my dress. That was my reaction too.
  22. Ooh, a handsome doctuh with a house on Fire Island. Your uniform probably helps/helped!
