in the very early 1970s, when I was about 8 or 9 y.o., we took a family rafting trip on some whitewater in the Sierra foothills.....as we were getting ready to hit the water, two nearby 20-something dudes got fully naked and skinny-dipped and walked around.....they were in-shape and good-looking and I remember admiring them for, I guess, looking good and masculine....I even giddily asked a couple relatives if they'd seen the guys.....was the first time I'd seen an adult dude besides my Dad naked, I think....did not know anything about gay/straight/girls/sex at the time, but something clicked, I guess.....maybe it was just seeing anybody naked for the first time in public that was titillating.....but I do remember they looked good 7th grade (age 12) was the first year a shower was available to those of us who wanted to take one after gym (not required)....we had class with the 8th graders at the same time and one of the 8th grade guys had evidently already hit puberty.....he seemed to know it, too, because he'd take a shower and then would linger full-frontal naked a few seconds longer than necessary at the shower exit in full view of everybody....classic tall, dark, and handsome and was nicely hung, too......looked good..... about the same time, I asked my younger brother (age about ten) to go with me to the local c-store to buy me a Playgirl magazine....I was too nervous (embarrassed?) to buy one myself in front of the male clerk, who, otherwise, didn't evidently care about selling any adult magazine to any kid.....I remember the clerk asking my brother if he was sure he didn't want a Playboy and my bro saying it was for me over there....I was lingering nervously near the candy rack and then saw the clerk look at me like "what the fuck?" as we both quickly exited..... mentioned above is Christopher Atkins.....I remember when "Blue Lagoon" came out in 1980 and seeing a picture in one of the "Teen Beat"-type magazines just before the movie's release showing him wearing that loincloth-like deal......that may've started my fetish for jockstraps!

will probably make my first ever trip to SE Asia this fall of 2017 (late Oct)..... will be asking buddies who have been there and will be perusing guidebooks, but want to ask here as I know many here know the area well will probably first fly direct to HKG from the US west coast....don't need to do the whole business class/first class thing, but any ideas on airlines and whether to go out of LAX or SFO?.....I have no airline miles (on airlines or networks that fly this route) and will probably want to economize the air portion of the trip....prefer leaving and arriving at sane hours of the day Hong Kong: just want to see this urban metropolis and the buildings, walk the neighborhoods, hike the hills, see some "wow" views, people-watch, take some ferries....and whatever else "must" be seen...ideas?....I'm NOT a foodie and am not much into art.....if there's a general history museum or must-see local entertainment/live show, I'd be into that.....don't mind public transport and walking.....Kowloon or HK Island??.....is Macau necessary to see?.....three or four days is enough?......all comments welcome.....practical hints, too! Thailand: will certainly hit the touristy things in Bangkok (or not needed?), but any out-of-the-way suggestions off the tourist track?.....stay in a certain neighborhood for convenience?.....outside Bangkok, what is must-see?.....can I arrange a guided tour upon arrival for both short day trips and multi-day tours outside the city?.....are the Oriental and the Peninsula hotels and similar worth staying at?.....nice walking neighborhoods?....what stuff should be avoided?.....trains or buses to other parts of the country?....any comments/ideas for Phuket or Pattaya (too overrun?)....I do like beaches and water SE Asia: what other nearby countries are mandatory and which are not worth it?......buddies have been to Vietnam and I may try to work it in.....can day trips to Angkor Wat be done out of Bangkok?.....I'm not really a "ruins" kinda guy, but I know A. W. is very significant....is it a zoo of tourists?....is it any more than just excavated walls and walking around outside?! (sorry to be cynical)..... trains and buses would be nice to take as is practical between major destinations.....but are planes from HKG to BKK frequent?.....advance purchase or anytime for the cheapest fares?..... lots of questions, I know.....I will be looking at guidebooks, too.....appreciate all comments!.....

one of the great cities of the US.....I hope I'm one of the ones who "gets" it, as @corndog hopes for!...... yeah, wander the French Quarter and see what there is to see there, just to say you did, then get yourself off the tourist track...... fairly recently took a very good walking tour organized, I think?, out of a visitor center/book store/gift shop ??? in the historic Pontalba Apartments building.....the very savvy and hip guide said (to the entire group) do NOT go to Cafe du Monde and, instead, suggested an entirely local, small cafe for coffee and sweets around the corner and up the street (he did not get a commission).....though it was in the heart of the FQ, I even spied a few locals in the joint!.....later, walking by the Cafe du Monde, I was relieved I didn't brave the line of starry-eyed tourists and harried staff.....even the "secret" side window for ordering was jammed....the guide also cautioned us on the correct way to pronounce Chartres, Esplanade, and "praline" and, of course, suggested the best spot to buy some visitors should not expect a pristine, wealthy, clean, utterly charming experience in NOLA.....I like to experience the real thing when I travel and the often poorly-maintained roads, the sometimes confusing intersections and signage, the average airport, and the general state of "faded grandeur" are just what I like about NOLA.... I deliberately walked out of the "safety" of the FQ and into the Marigny and Treme-Lafitte neighborhoods one time.....instant reality check....no silly bars or hawkers, no home tours with "period furniture" reproductions, only real people and houses.....I heard some lively jazz music in the distance a few blocks and wandered toward it....boom! one of those classic NOLA funerals like we only see in the movies....nice!...... drive thru the Lower Ninth Ward.......walk a nice path in City Park to Lake Pontchartrain (wow, that's an ocean)...... turn right when the guidebook says left
