will probably make my first ever trip to SE Asia this fall of 2017 (late Oct)..... will be asking buddies who have been there and will be perusing guidebooks, but want to ask here as I know many here know the area well will probably first fly direct to HKG from the US west coast....don't need to do the whole business class/first class thing, but any ideas on airlines and whether to go out of LAX or SFO?.....I have no airline miles (on airlines or networks that fly this route) and will probably want to economize the air portion of the trip....prefer leaving and arriving at sane hours of the day Hong Kong: just want to see this urban metropolis and the buildings, walk the neighborhoods, hike the hills, see some "wow" views, people-watch, take some ferries....and whatever else "must" be seen...ideas?....I'm NOT a foodie and am not much into art.....if there's a general history museum or must-see local entertainment/live show, I'd be into that.....don't mind public transport and walking.....Kowloon or HK Island??.....is Macau necessary to see?.....three or four days is enough?......all comments welcome.....practical hints, too! Thailand: will certainly hit the touristy things in Bangkok (or not needed?), but any out-of-the-way suggestions off the tourist track?.....stay in a certain neighborhood for convenience?.....outside Bangkok, what is must-see?.....can I arrange a guided tour upon arrival for both short day trips and multi-day tours outside the city?.....are the Oriental and the Peninsula hotels and similar worth staying at?.....nice walking neighborhoods?....what stuff should be avoided?.....trains or buses to other parts of the country?....any comments/ideas for Phuket or Pattaya (too overrun?)....I do like beaches and water SE Asia: what other nearby countries are mandatory and which are not worth it?......buddies have been to Vietnam and I may try to work it in.....can day trips to Angkor Wat be done out of Bangkok?.....I'm not really a "ruins" kinda guy, but I know A. W. is very significant....is it a zoo of tourists?....is it any more than just excavated walls and walking around outside?! (sorry to be cynical)..... trains and buses would be nice to take as is practical between major destinations.....but are planes from HKG to BKK frequent?.....advance purchase or anytime for the cheapest fares?..... lots of questions, I know.....I will be looking at guidebooks, too.....appreciate all comments!.....

one of the great cities of the US.....I hope I'm one of the ones who "gets" it, as @corndog hopes for!...... yeah, wander the French Quarter and see what there is to see there, just to say you did, then get yourself off the tourist track...... fairly recently took a very good walking tour organized, I think?, out of a visitor center/book store/gift shop ??? in the historic Pontalba Apartments building.....the very savvy and hip guide said (to the entire group) do NOT go to Cafe du Monde and, instead, suggested an entirely local, small cafe for coffee and sweets around the corner and up the street (he did not get a commission).....though it was in the heart of the FQ, I even spied a few locals in the joint!.....later, walking by the Cafe du Monde, I was relieved I didn't brave the line of starry-eyed tourists and harried staff.....even the "secret" side window for ordering was jammed....the guide also cautioned us on the correct way to pronounce Chartres, Esplanade, and "praline" and, of course, suggested the best spot to buy some visitors should not expect a pristine, wealthy, clean, utterly charming experience in NOLA.....I like to experience the real thing when I travel and the often poorly-maintained roads, the sometimes confusing intersections and signage, the average airport, and the general state of "faded grandeur" are just what I like about NOLA.... I deliberately walked out of the "safety" of the FQ and into the Marigny and Treme-Lafitte neighborhoods one time.....instant reality check....no silly bars or hawkers, no home tours with "period furniture" reproductions, only real people and houses.....I heard some lively jazz music in the distance a few blocks and wandered toward it....boom! one of those classic NOLA funerals like we only see in the movies....nice!...... drive thru the Lower Ninth Ward.......walk a nice path in City Park to Lake Pontchartrain (wow, that's an ocean)...... turn right when the guidebook says left

resurrecting this thread to give a brief report on my first visit to the Nob Hill in San Francisco...... located only two short blocks from the priceless real estate of Nob Hill (what a difference a very short walk down the hill makes), I found the place to be small, clean, and friendly....I asked how it all works and the helpful, casual desk guy told me all about it.....$20 entry for both the theater and downstairs arcade.....$15, I think, for just the arcade....(prices may vary)....the staff also told me I could leave the premises for a drink or whatever and return without an extra charge (check for a stamp or ticket)....it was a Monday eve and the entire place was very quiet.....I asked about the recent death of the "owner" and the desk guy told me he had been "part-owner", implying things would go on as normal.....I had a daypack with me and I was able to keep it with me, but they offered to hold it if I wanted solo dancers perform for 30-minute sets in the small theater, then a new guy comes on.....I was the only person in the theater area and entered to find a well-built guy stroking his hard-on on stage, disco lights ablaze.....ostensibly, the 30-minute sets are meant to be about ten minutes of stage show and about 20 minutes of mingling in the "crowd" for privates and tips.....but the dancers seem to have free rein over how they manage their time.....all was very casual.....the theater being empty except for me, this first guy with the hard-on pretty quickly came down to my seat and showed off, letting me paw all over.....I tipped him about $10 or $15 for several minutes of private time.....the same routine continued for me through several dudes' sets and other customers came and went, as did I......they apparently very much rely on tips and the liberal nudity/privates policy here seems well worth it compared to other North American clubs with the ubiquitous $20/song policy.....if the theater is busy (with patrons), you may have to make solid eye-contact with the dancer as he mingles (if you want a private)...no privacy in the theater, but there are a couple rows with extra legroom so you don't have to have the dancer squeeze uncomfortably between you and the row in front.....guys' attitudes and allowances varied, but all was very fun and exceedingly casual.....tip these guys!! the downstairs arcade, accessible by going back into the "lobby" from the theater to the stairs, is primarily a cruise-y area, it seems....several video booths, glory holes inside some of them, and dudes walking around.....not being a cruising kinda guy, I dutifully averted my eyes!.....there is also a very dark "Underground" area down there (themed after the London Underground) that one is free to walk through and see what's going on.....nothing much was going on at all, though there were more guys here than in the theater....I presume things get pretty hot down there on busy nights.....as always, be polite and respectful....move between the theater and arcade as you wish there is a Naked Night on Tuesdays for customers and other weekly/monthly events....check the website also, there are fairly regular weekend sex shows in the theater (Fri and Sat eves) for a slightly higher fee, often featuring well-known adult-video actors.....the desk staff told me the theater can get fairly full for those (about 80 seats in the theater).....website is not always updated for the regular daily theater performers, but staff said the sex shows are well-marked on the website...... http://thenobhilltheatre.com/
