This reminds me of an exchange I saw at work, on our team's chat room. "Bob" called out "Greg" for missing a conference call Greg had scheduled; 10 minutes past the scheduled time Bob said he was leaving, & told Greg to reschedule. Greg immediately replied "I'm here now, I was talking to Dan (his boss)", and it turned into a bit of a cat fight about how often Greg did this, several times already that day, and how long & how many times were people supposed to wait for him. I admit I watched this with some glee as I'd been treated that way multiple times by Greg myself.

Words do not mean 'what we choose them to mean, nothing more nothing less'. You can't use a word to mean whatever you want, nor can you pretend that one of the accepted meanings of a word does not exist just because you don't like it. You also cannot refuse to accept that some words have come to be offensive in certain contexts. Gay, queer and homosexual are perfectly valid words to reference certain sexual identities and patterns of attraction. People may have their preference for how to describe themselves, and each word has its own nuances of meaning. To my ear, homosexual works if it is used in an academic or sociological sense but has become insulting and even pathologising if used to refer to a particular individual in a social context, or to refer to a community. Another issue to consider is that some offensive words can be appropriated and even become acceptable within the group towards which they were used as slurs. Thus the N word and faggot have been 'owned' by PoC and some gay people. That does not make it acceptable for people outside those groups to use them, and no, that is not hypocrisy. Language moves and grows continually, and English ebbs and flows in different ways in the different Englishes. To refuse to understand the way the language has changed is to refuse to understand the world.

The question of states being legally the successor of another state in terms of treaty continuity (like republic of Portugal being the successor of the kingdom of Portugal, the PRC being the successor state of the empire of China, or the federal republic of Russia being the legal successor of the Soviet Union) are discussed, argued and agreed through diplomacy.
There are no official rules for this.
 
The British had many reasons to agree, together with China, that the PRC was a successor of the Empire. This meant any debt that China had, all the currency that China had issued etc, etc, still had value. All other treaties still could be enforced.
Yes, it also meant that Hong Kong was going to be returned, but to be honest, HK was extremely dependent on mainland China in 97, especially on fresh water and food. So if the British had refused, China would simply have turned off the taps until they reconsidered. 6.5 million people would have been in an emergency situation that would have cost far too much to the British state to support. With the handover, the relationship with the second largest economy of the world is good, British investors were able to profit from the massive growth that China created (thanks to their tight relationships in Honk Kong, which was a major investment port into the rest of China) etc.
Also the Brits are now considered trustworthy. You can sign a 99 year treaty with them, and they will abide by it until the end!
