Strangely, this thread appears here today for my eyes to focus.  (02/27/23).

Maybe deposits are becoming a more regular thing.  Maybe not. Either way, DON'T DO IT (unless you have money to throw away and not whine about it later or are asking someone to travel a great distance and need to cover their travel expenses and travel time.)

I will not pay a deposit. If a provider requires one, then I move on and hire a provider who doesn't. If a provider finds that deposits work for them, that's great. But I won't send a deposit to someone I've never met with no independent way to recoup my offering if the meeting doesn't occur.

Recently, a provider with whom I was texting said I could pay in advance via PayPal and there would be a $50 discount. Since this happened about two hours before we met, I said I'd already been to the ATM and I'd just pay the originally agreed upon amount. This is all about preferences, not for everyone I’m sure.
