Is the American dream dead? Have YOU achieved it?
TonyDown replied to marylander1940's topic in Personal Finance & Investing
...the disillusionment of the American Dream, the dangers of materialism, the power of social class, the corrupting influence of wealth, and the unattainability of the past The above are themes assigned to The Great Gatsby, written in 1925. If that book suggested the dream was dead, 100 years ago, can one blame anyone for suggesting the same thing now? My Dad's parents arrived from the old country and found honest work, a maid and a blacksmith. Grandpa barely survived a deadly coal train accident, with a severe head injury. He went on to marry Grandma. Back then infant mortality was significant. Dad was their fourth and final try. Dad served in the Pacific at the very end, Tinian and Okinawa. After the war, Mom and Dad had 5 boys, me, the last. When I think about it, I'm lucky to be here. Nowadays, when I hear coworkers worry about housing affordability and skyrocketing tuition costs, I wonder. But yes, I'd say I have achieved the American dream. I had an excellent public school education and got an engineering degree from a very competitive state school. The tuition was affordable. I saved and invested well, so I have more than enough. I own my home near the beach. Good enough for me. -
Bridgett? Jack was the very first character on screen in The Gilded Age. I wonder if Julian Fellows did that for a certain reason. He's led a sheltered life, is well liked, and talented. I fear Bridgett may be slightly high maintenance, for him to deal with. I hope she does right by him.

I wish MsMojo would have included Homophobia in The Gilded Age. How Larry suggested to Jack he might find a male companion at The Haymarket, as well as how Oscar was bequeathed John Adam's cottage and how he seems headed for a marriage with a beard all seems significant. That said, I am glad to find I'm not the only one that finds Jack delightful. Perhaps Oscar will get a taste.

Grocery Shopping II: Self check out, like or loath?
TonyDown replied to ICTJOCK's topic in The Lounge
One might need that days or weeks later. But also, they might claim an item was taken that's not on the receipt. Also, an innocent mistake has gotten many customers arrested. Wish I could find that vlog, by a lawyer recommending to avoid self checkout altogether. -
Finally watched. I give it 3 out of 5 stars. May be difficult for some people to watch. Available on Prime, and other platforms. The movie is a thriller and has some nudity. Not bad for a film produced on a limited budget. I liked how it shows Benjamin (gay) and Dom (straight) cared about each other, even suggesting they loved each other. The bad guy is super ugly, inside and out, and stereotypically queeny.

Grocery Shopping II: Self check out, like or loath?
TonyDown replied to ICTJOCK's topic in The Lounge
I listened to a vlog recommending not using self checkout for legal reasons. The gist of it was stores are going after people, and that you would need evidence you hadn't stolen the suspect item. Stores assume the worst and use a heavy hand. I tend not to use self-check out for the above issue, and to support employment. -
My credit union has a promotional CD rate of 4.30% APY, 13 months. Based on news about the Fed, I plan to grab that rate. Since my prior post, CD rates on those various Websites have ticked back down slightly.

Bull market not done yet
TonyDown replied to + Vegas_Millennial's topic in Personal Finance & Investing
@augustus LPL Financial latest live Web event admitted pretty much the same thing, that "stocks are expensive." They also believe the bullish trend will continue, which many pundits on CNBC agree. Remember "irrational exuberance"? Do we need a new term? I don't understand how so many asset classes can be finding new highs, yet we're told there is a lot of cash on the sidelines. Where is the cash coming from for buys? Blame it on Crypto? I don't know. Stocks are way up again today. -
He's visiting LA. Shared his incall rate : 200/60 min, 250/90 min Based on the comments, I'm tempted, but having sticker shock lately on rates.

I hope (and my sense is) such a publication as Ward McCallister's book, back in that era, would not expose Oscar's behavior around sexuality. IMO The Gilded Age will be better with a partition between Oscar's story and Ward McCallister's social standard. Watching Oscar deal with his friends and family is enough. Maybe he'll spend a weekend with Jack? 😃 [EDIT: Watching a 2nd time, sounds like the book does have an ambiguous reference to Oscar, that could potentially bubble up. Perhaps all the right people will help smooth things over.] Besides, we have Peggy Scott's adopted baby to deal with, thanks to Mrs. E. Brown!😮 Loving Leslie Uggams. More please

I understand the new Lucas Museum in Los Angeles will include his Leyendecker collection. Excited to see that. Scheduled to open next year. Would love to have seen the 2023 show in New York, mentioned in the thread above. I was in touch with a trusted expert that suggested another show unlikely for now. That said, I'm doing my best to learn about him. I have visited The Haggin Museum, in Stockton, CA., mentioned in the above. Enjoyed their large collection very much. Would love to see the collection at the National Museum of American Illustration, when/if they reopen. Does anyone have a status on that? Their email contact has not responded which is not a good sign, IMO. I understand there are other private owners of Leyendecker's work as well as. Time marches on. The people that knew people that knew Leyendecker are gradually passing on. There is quite a bit of content out there for anyone wanting to learn about the man, as well as vlogs that cater to art students.

I realized this week I've become hooked on The Gilded Age and part of that is how good Cynthia Nixon is. So outstanding. Aunt Ada is a great part. +++++++++++++++++++++SPOILER++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Tonight's epi, when Oscar breaks down in front of his family about John was a great scene. Marian and Aunt Ida's empathy got me all verklempt.

To you history experts, approximately what year is The Gilded Age currently set? Does the business world failures point to the Panic of 1893?

Paying an Executor and Successor Trustee
TonyDown replied to TonyDown's topic in Personal Finance & Investing
I listened to a reputable figure many of you know mention when he served in Afghanistan his superior advised to write a letter to be opened in case of death. That sounds like a smart idea. Besides any personal messages, I might also choose to list things like the following: Where are copies of my estate plan/will Name of my lawyer, doctor Name of my financial advisor Account numbers Benefits coordinator contact (retirement pension and healthcare). Other personal contacts needing to know I'm gone. Circling back to the above conversation, I'm glad I chose family versus a professional executor. My estate is not complicated, so a professional would have been needlessly expensive IMO and frankly, based on the two outfits I contacted, I am more confidant with family taking care of it. -

Real Talk on massage rates - let me know your thoughts
TonyDown replied to Hey_Jay's topic in Questions About Hiring
I texted a profile in Orange County yesterday. His ad said ASK for rate. He replied $200/ hr, combination massage. Higher than I expected. Is 200 the new normal for a massage? -
What will our Larry do when he opens Marian's letter? Now that Jack is cut loose from the only family he's known.....will our boys need to console each other? ......or just head back to The Haymarket? Maybe Madame Dashkova can guide!

What's this? Madame Dashkova returns! .. and Wow, what an episode 6 finale! 😮

Exposing Traditionally Discreet Queer Social Practices
TonyDown replied to CheckCar's topic in The Lounge
Thank you for sharing that. Well done vlog. What I typically don't like is when a straight vlogger does a piece on gay cruising. I recall one at an isolated beach in Japan, where they caught one fellow by surprise. Imagine expecting privacy when a silly reporter appears and sticks a microphone in your face. Of course there was Nico Hines, the straight Brit reporter that did a piece on how many Olympians he found were hooking up on Grindr. His piece identified their home countries in some cases. This kind of content treats us like zoo animals, in my opinion, and are very questionable. There are, or used to be, gay websites that listed public hook up locations. In the age of the Internet, queer discretion has certainly evolved.
