In Brazil, people often describe themselves by the degree they obtained at university, even if they never practiced in the field. "Lawyers" may have a law degree, but not be a member of the OAB. I know several. (And, of course, the sophistication of law schools varies considerably, with very fine schools at the federal universities, and less prestigious private schools offering a less rigorous education.) I don't find it suspect, but do think the statement is being made from a Brazilian perspective, then heard from an American perspective -- and we don't always define our professional identities in the same way.

There are bottoms for whom it is important. It feels different, reaches different spots, or maybe fulfills different psychological desires. I know what I prefer, and if I'm going to hire, I want to satisfy my desire (not someone else's preferences or worldview).
