There are so many strange parts to this story.   Why were YOU having issues staying awake?   
(At that time I was still 73% zonked, and although I had remained conscious throughout, he claimed that it was I who had gone completely under!)
I know you said you're not going to answer "random" question - but I thinks this is not random at all and goes to the heart of your post.

Not going to answer random questions... Accept the evidence as it stands! Sometimes I roll the dice with strangers because there is something (inharmoniously) alluring about them. Sometimes I'm just seeking to expand my research database. And I did make an emotional connection here, even though it didn't lead to anything enduring or particularly meaningful.

the OP description of escort is actually a very small subset of professional providers.  The vast majority are far more average types no matter the place.
the subsequent preferred description of a “bit more real, masculine……” is more like the typical providers in Brazil & Thailand, where they have a fairly well developed market for this exact thing. There are hundreds of guys that fit that description. 
idk - maybe the attraction for Africa is going somewhere where it’s more difficult/risky/dangerous ?  If the purpose is to meet men, that just doesn’t seem worthwhile to travel all that way & then perhaps a letdown when it doesn’t work out for whatever reason.
 

I saw a matinee performance of The Outsiders where 4 of the leads were played by understudies. They were all cute and I thought that they did a great job. The fight scene in the rain is spectacular.

I've not seen TheOutsiders yet (have tix in a couple weeks) but it definitely has the highest "cute boy" quotient of the season. (Though HeartOfRock&Roll displays a good deal of hunky eye-candy as well.)
I liked Appropriate a lot; I've seen previous productions and this one just nails it.

There is an Amazon show by the same name "The Diplomat" that plays out in Barcelona - not related but also quite good - I am on the 2nd episode and it is good so far. More of a British flavor.
