"HOLLYWOOD ROCKED: 'GAY COWBOY' MOVIE BECOMES AN OSCAR FRONTRUNNER

Arriving with nudity and explicit gay sex scenes between two cowboys, UNIVERSAL/FOCUS FILMS's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has quietly become an award season frontrunner, interviews with Academy members reveal.

"It could very well be the last film standing at this year's Oscars," a top Hollywood producer not associated with the film explained from Hollywood.

"There was not a dry eye in the house at the screening at Telluride [Film Festival in Colorado]," says the producer, who asked not to be named out of respect for the cast and crew of the producer's own Oscar contender. "Watch it come out of the gate at the Golden Globes with super controversy."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS critic Jack Mathews predicts the gay cowboy movie, which takes place in Wyoming, may be "too much for red-state audiences, but it gives the liberal-leaning Academy a great chance to stick its thumb in conservatives' eyes."

Director Ang Lee's movie staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall.

But will a movie even Madonna calls "shocking" sit with the heartland?

Playwright and lifelong Wyomingite tells the STAR-TRIBUNE of Casper this week that she has never encountered a gay cowboy, and doesn't think it's right for Hollywood to portray Wyoming as a state with gay cowboys.

Her message to the writers of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: “Don't try and take what we had, which was wonderful -- the cowboys that settled the state and made it what it was -- don't ruin that image... There's nothing better than plain old cowboys and the plain old history without embellishing it to suit everyone."

Meanwhile, Michell Howard of the state's Travel and Tourism Division says her agency is already hearing a buzz that people in other countries are expressing interest in visiting Wyoming because of the film.

“It's gotten rave reviews from the international community,” she said. “I don't know if they're more tolerant or something, but they're viewing it as a great Western movie.”

RE: Brokenback Mountain is Oscar Frontrunner

As always it's too soon to make a prediction as to who the oscar frontrunner will be by year's end. It's nothing new, every Hollywood writer and reporter seem to be making predictions every other week as to who the front runner will be for the Oscars.

Let's say for supposition sake that Brokenback Mountain is taken into consideration for oscar buzz. It certainly wouldn't be the first time. A movie like Ron Howards " Cinderella Man " over the summertime received rave reviews by critics and the early Oscar buzz was huge. Like most things that happen in Hollywood, the hype died down. There are quite a good number of movies that will receive lots of attention. Let's name a few shall we, Crash, Zuma, Goodnight And Goodluck, Millions, Shopgirl, Dreamer, North Country, Kingdom Of Heaven, All The Kings Men, The Constant Gardener, Paradise Now, the upcoming " Pride And Predujice " and quite possibly " March Of The Penguins, although the latter will probably be thrown into best documentary and offcourse " Cinderella Man ".

Brokenback Mountain may have a chance at best, but by the end of this year the Academy is going to have a hard time to come with some good and solid finalists.

IMHO.BrokeBack Mtn... Wishful Thinking. And as far as the Foreign Press goes, The "Golden Globes".. The Small Marketing Tool, that for some reason over the years has turned into The Big Marketing Tool!

Just because they have Accents doesn't mean they have Taste! Selling something in Europe, is not the same as Selling something in the U.S. I seriously doubt this Movie will rise to the Top of the pile. :+

The film may be another "Talented Mr. Ripley," which opened to much advance hype, solid reviews, then did mediocre business and faded. Maybe audiences weren't ready for Matt's butt and Jude's dick. I'm ready for both -- at the same time.

What I am trying to figure out is - "Has this movie already played at area theatres and I have missed it, or is it a movie that hasn't been released to the general movie circuit yet?" Thanks! I have not seen it listed for Chicago is why I am asking.

Not sure if it's actually released yet but I read somewhere that it's going to be a limited release like many indies. Which is one reason it won't take (m)any awards.

It is due to open Dec 16, 2005. Presumably in the major cosmopolitan markets.

I've seen the trailer (which you can catch at http://www.brokebackmountain.com ) and it looks like a "silo of queer corn" but it's won a bunch of prizes so far, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It also played in the Toronto festival, and all the reviews I've seen from there were raves.

According to the official site, it'll open December 9, probably only in NY and LA. I know it'll play in the local art theater here in San Jose on the 16th.

And as long as we're on the subject, Mysterious Skin just came out on DVD and well worth checking out. Gregg Araki finally made a decent movie.
