I totally agree. So many people live poor so they can die rich. Spend it and enjoy it. You'll never see a hearse pulling a U-HAUL cause you can't take it with you.

Actually I see way more people do the opposite. Spending right up to or just slightly past their income and then being absolutely floored when a crisis hits and they can't pay their mortgage or a doctor's bill etc. I have that tendency too, but I made sure when I started working to have retirement account deductions taken straight out of my paycheck, putting it somewhere it's harder to get at. If I had just had to put the money in the bank or a non-retirement account I never would have saved it.

I'm with @sniper. The stats in the USA are incredibly worrying and point to how inequality has created a looming crisis. Tens of millions of Boomers will have to literally work until they drop dead because they can't afford to retire. Some GenX will too. Many Millennials as well.

We are fairly strict with our savings efforts. We maintain an "emergency fund" separate from our retirement funds. We have budgets and generally stick to within 10% of them except in extreme situations.

I did an end of the year accounting last week and was frankly surprised at how much I spent in 2017 on escorts. For one particular regular, I shelled out just under $10,000.00, between extended sessions and overnights. No regrets, though, I had so much fun.

It adds up, especially with the weekend engagements, plus lovely dinners and trendy jeans and shoes. Scary!

It actually led to me spending quite a bit less on entertainment. I recommend it to anyone who's having trouble budgeting. Once you get over the hump of the first month where there's never going to be that much in the envelope, it's nice to watch it physically grow.

I like to watch other things grow!
