Another gender flip: Patti Smith singing (and rewriting the lyrics to) Bruce Springsteen's "Because the Night." Between new lyrics and old and the fact that it's Patti singing, not Bruce, the song means something different.

Like David Crosby's "Triad" (see above), which first appeared on a Jefferson Airplane album as sung by Grace Slick, Smith's was the first recorded version to be released.

 

10,000 Maniacs (among others) also covered it.

Ethel Merman at the Kennedy Inaugural Gala in January 1961. The producers of "Gypsy" closed the musical for a night so that Ethel Merman could take part in the gala, so this may be the definitive version -- unavailable until recently. The gale was not on TV.
