In the 1960s there were gay dance bars in NYC like the Fawn and the Cherry Lane, and I assume the cabaret law was one of the legal options for harassing them, since they were always eventually closed by the police.

It's a staple in any NYC bar: you and your friends start tapping your feet to the music, and they tell you to stop because they don't have a cabaret license.

@Kevin Slater - do you know how that law is applicable (or not) in the setting of a gym, where a gym bunny might bounce around in between sets, rocking out to the music in his headphones? Asking for a friend.

 

Dunno. I suspect it may require the presence of booze, or maybe restricted to entertainment venues. In any case, I've never heard anyone say anything in a gym. (Unfortunately.)
