Newly returned to this scene... i became very interested in a guy on backpage.

Despite what appears to be mostly very sketchy offers on BP, this guy looked fantastic. We spoke on the phone, an Alabama number, using the name Norris. He was very polite on phone, and I made an appointment to meet at his upscale hotel (sometimes the quality and location of a hotel is reassuring)

Nonetheless, my "too good to be true" alarm was buzzing. A Google search of images revealed the pictures were of well known Latin porn actor, Junior Baiano. Found xvideos of Junior too.

I shared my skepticism with Norris, telling him about the picture-concerns. He replied that pictures get stolen online all the time, implying his images had been stolen. He then offered to FaceTime. I have Android, not iPhone, and FaceTime is incompatible.

I cancelled.

I don't regret canceling, believe it was prudent. But he seemed believable on phone. More to the point.... how could he be faking and offer FaceTime?

Can FaceTime be faked?

I know a bit about tech - and like most techies i'll do the annoying thing and respond to your question with more questions - namely, what do you mean by faked? First off, genuine FaceTime . one apple device to another - is pretty secure. Apple devices are locked down and it's much harder to get "under the hood" than it is on Android devices. For instance, I know it's pretty easy to spoof your location on an Android device or even in some Android emulator - but this is pretty impossible on an iPhone.

Now, can someone really clever somehow capture the video stream and send it somewhere else? or provide you with some pre-canned video? Maybe, (again, on an Android device ) BUT - if you're talking to another human being, having conversation, seeing his lips move and eyes blink and asking questions which he is answering - well - I think we're far away from advanced lifelike online avatars that can interact in real time.

Thanks.... you interpreted my question correctly.

So, that still leaves me wondering. I feel confident I was correct in finding a guy was using pictures not his own. I can't imagine what he hoped to accomplish by offering to FaceTime with me when I questioned the photos' origin.

Isn't it possible during your communications that he figured out you don't have an iPhone and the offer to FaceTime was a bluff that he could have claimed technical issues or something if you took him up on it?

Possible... But I don't know how. Unless phone voice calls reveal device. I didn't text him, And i found his ad, replied/emailed from a different device.

I don't regret not hiring. I'm just trying to arm myself with info to be prepared for scammers. Mostly, I figured out pretty quickly, that backpage ads are not likely to yield success.

Very often, when I ask for a FaceTime conference, the candidate tells me he doesn't have an iPhone. In these cases I ask for a selfie holding a sign that reads "Hola (my real name)".

Sometimes this probes the pictures in the ad are not his, but I do not mind fake pics in the ad if the guy is equally hot.

I suspect this may have been what he was banking on, that he would be exposed using fake pics but that his own appearance would be competitive, especially when lightly spiced with AVAILABLE NOW.

I FaceTimed with a escort once, was very satisfied with who I saw.

When I arrived at his hotel room, it was a totally different person, and the room was different.

Beware of stand-ins!

Did he hire an actor?

Anybody under 30 would rather not having food instead of not having an iPhone.
