Well there seemed to be little interest in grumpiness. Though today I considered restarting that thread. I have gotten a per diem position teaching medical residents. I will work 2 week blocks when there is an opening. In order to start this position, I spent practically one entire week getting paperwork done, having a physical, going to HR and taking a computer course. This, to work for the same organization and at the same hospital for which I was working until 5 weeks ago.

The lowlight came when I went to get my picture ID at security. I walked in and explained my situation to the security agent who I did not know. He looked up my record and pulled out my picture from my previous ID and when he found it, he let out an audible gasp of horror and jumped back in his chair. With a slight tremble in his voice he asked: Is this you?

I assured him that it was. He then said I could use that photo or get a new one.

Now I was perplexed because I was not sure if it was the old picture which caused him to make the Shaggy sees a ghost face and voice or if it was the dramatic deterioration in my looks that startled him so. So I asked him what he thought.

He replied: Quite frankly, I do not think it will make a difference.

Well just Wow. Aging is one thing, but looking like a character from Sean of the Dead is something else.

For those who care, I got a new picture. I immediately slid it in my wallet without looking at it and I am hoping no one asks to see it.

Thank you PK for posting this. As humans, with our rushed all-important lives, we forget the stunning world around us. On another note, I get a little heart-heavy whenever I hear the Louis Armstrong version --- it was the "hold music" for Windows On The World (the restaurant atop 1 World Trade Center). I used to call WOTW on a regular basis when I worked for American Express some 20 yrs ago. It was reduced to dust on that painful day in September.

p.s. Good for you for taking an updated photo. With my less-than-white teeth and receding hair, I'm not into the 'selfie' thing. When I take a less than flattering pic I tell myself: That was me for 1 second of my life; when I take a decent photo, I tell myself: "Damn, that $20 tube of Retin Serum was worth it!"

Had the same experience when I renewed my driver license.

FWIW...A friend and I are traveling internationally in a few months and we both had to get our passports renewed. Terrified at seeing the ten year comparison of then and now, when the new one arrived, I poured a stiff scotch, up no ice with a water back. I sat down and slowly opened the new passport. Shockingly... I looked pretty damn good. :D I'm not bragging mind you, but I actually look better than I did back in 07. ;) Unfortunately the DL just came up for renewal also, so I'm praying for a repeat, but I'm not hopeful. :(

Just renewed my passport with the worst picture I've ever taken. The customs guys usually look at it, then back at me, then back at it, then.......well you get it.

Actually when people see me they always say, "Your skin looks absolutely amazing." I just take that as great. It countermands the fact that every time my family gets together (and that is often, much too often I think!) we take pictures. When I am sent them, I always see someone that I cannot tell who they are. Then I realize it is me, not my father or a seldom seen uncle.
