These two women were fiercely competitive, and for most of their careers they were owned by fiercely competitive studios who held the reins of power. I doubt any one of us could really understand the lives these two women endured. For most of their adult life, they were willingly controlled by very powerful men.

Both women had all-consuming egos, but very different personalities. They both drank and smoked a lot. Bette Davis was more earthy and outspoken. Joan Crawford killed you with a strict, expertly tailored style and elegance. I don't think one was better than the other. Both performers had the talent and the power to devastate. I'm fascinated by their story of working hard to survive and stay relevant. By the time they hit their 50's, everything in their business world had changed.

Bette Davis appeared on many more TV talk shows than Joan Crawford. Davis had a far better sense of humor, at lease on TV, than Crawford.

If Crawford had been able to occasionally laugh about her grand manner, I might have liked her more.

If I'm not mistaken this song is sung to the song that the teenage girl (Davis's daughter in real life?) is playing at one point in the movie. Anyone know if I'm right?

Crawford's revenge backfired and made her look like a fool on national TV at 1963 Academy Awards. Accepting the Academy Award for Bancroft was bad, but then appearing in photos with the actual Oscar winners was worse.

And following that up with her role in Trog, I'd say that pretty much sealed the fate of her late career.

It is, however, an unintentionally funny movie: Best watched with a few drinks and an appreciation for high camp.

Joan Crawford doing some of her best work.

As the years have gone by, Davis' performances often look more and more dated and more and more awful. Apart from All About Eve, she is pretty much unwatchable after 1946. She became a cartoon after that, while Crawford did some of her best work in that period.

I think it's a good mini series. I wish they would do a mini series on the feud between Betty White and Bea Arthur on the golden girls. I literally LOL'd when I heard Rue McClanahan telling the story at Bea's funeral of when Bea met Rue's husband and she said she loved Rue but Betty White's a cunt and I heard a story that one time Bea was really pissed off at Betty about something and when Betty wasn't around she took a dump in the toilet in her trailer and didn't flush the toilet.

Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedy brothers mixes show business and politics. RM has already told us a lot about Hedda Hopper and Jack Warner. It's a puzzlement beyond Charles and Diana..

I'm surprised that when Joan pulled her wig off in Torch Song that her career wasn't destroyed. But she forged on and overcame this train wreck of a scene. Lol

Re FEUD - I'm not understanding the Mamacita character. Is she based on someone real? Or was she just created for comic effect? She looks and acts like some combination of Cloris Leechman in HIGH ANXIETY and the Frau from AUSTIN POWERS. With her weird German (?) accent, why is her name Mamacita?

She was German, and Joan explained in interviews how her name became known as Mamacita. In Hollywood, she was almost as famous as Joan, as many long-time handlers are.

I too, was a bit confused. In the movie "Mommie Dearest", Mamacita was referred to as Carol Ann. She was more of a low key character (also less of a maid/more nanny or assistant) in that presentation.

Maybe she was still alive at the time. Can't seem to find when or if she went on to her maker. Here though you will find the scoop on Mamacita. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4351604/When-Joan-Crawford-met-Mamacita-German-immigrant-maid.html

I love Jackie, the actress playing her. She was great as the grandma in the Adaams Family and I've seen some of her stand up stuff.

I'm surprised she wasn't mentioned in Mommy Dearest and they didn't mention Carole Ann in Feud. Or was Carol Ann a made up character in Mommy Dearest, I know in the movie they left a lot of stuff out like not even mentioning the twins

Thanks, guys, for the clarification on Mamacita. In FEUD, she reminds me of Rosario from WILL & GRACE.

Regarding burial sites, I read that recently Liza Minnelli and/or Lorna Loft had Judy's remains moved to Hollywood so they can all be together in a big family plot (unavailable in the NY cemetery). And Crawford's grave looks like a pauper's compared to Davis', which is a huge marble sarcophagus complete with statuary. I read somewhere that her coffin was a simple pine box - then entombed in that lavish grave site. Very apropos of her contradictory nature.

Carol Anne was a composite of several of Joan Crawford's helpers including Mamacita. Here's an article on the real personal assistant to Crawford who Carol Anne was partially based on

Another reason there are contradictions between Feud and Mommie Dearest. Raises so many questions regarding how much of each movie is fiction.

Reason for the differences between Mommy Dearest and Feud is that Betty Barker and Mamacita probably wete still alive and wouldn't consent or sign the waivers. Mommy Dearest is Christina's story while Fued is Joan's story. Lots of times when they make a movie they combine characters into one because it helps move the movie along. Also both of were barely mentioned in the book.

One of the last photos of Davis in San Sebastian, Spain. She died in the American Hospital in Paris on her way home from Spain.

I've come to the realization that FEUD is a dramatization of Bette and Joan's turbulent relationship. It is drawn from fact but is sometimes fictionalized to make it more watchable. I've enjoyed the show and all the actual information I've learned through this thread.

Impersonator Randy Allen did a remarkable one-man show called "P.S. Bette Davis." His obit doesn't explain, but the "P.S." stood for "post stroke."
