Thanks for posting this article, Mike. It does seem a bit short for the Economist, doesn't it? Wondering if it is an abstract?

I did just apply for a passport renewal form, and the operator recited to me what was needed. She said, "You will need your payment of $110, you old passport undamaged, application completed, and you must check the gender to which you were born. First time I had heard that, but I understand the reason for the added instructions.

Interesting.

I just renewed mine. i got the renewal form by internet. They do ask "sex" M or F but there is nothing about birth gender. I wonder if your operator was adding her own twist!

Could be...don't know. I didn't ask about gender, only about making an appointment for a renewal, which the lady at the regional post office said I needed to do, by calling the main post office in FTL. When I called the main post office, the operator said an appointment wasn't necessary, and that I needed only to bring the following, and then she listed what I needed including the line about checking the gender of your birth. That was it, I thanked her and hung up.

Maybe it's becoming an issue and operators are told to include that information....interesting

Big City . . . Small City. When i wanted to renew, I called up the various renewal places (post offices, libraries, etc.) and it was a 5 week wait for required appointment. Two weeks to send in and receive back, albeit an extra $60 or so.
