While I understand the interest in picking up street hustlers or random guys, I would just like to pass along a couple of stories that appeared in the most recent edition of the Washington Blade. Both involve older men murdered in their homes, possibly by young guys that they picked up on the street or hired for help around the house. One took place here in DC, the other one in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Here are the two articles.

Hey Aaron, thanks for the sobering glimpses into gay life. I for one would not have known about these incidents were it not for your considerate posting.

As bad as these incidents are, I am still wondering. Are they appalling for the crimes committed, or are they appalling because they were crimes against gay men?

I'd like to think that we have come a long way, and I am hoping that not only is the answer to both questions an unqualified "YES", but that at some point, real soon, it will only truly be ONE question.

With only ONE answer.

Just a quick response, more later after I have a chance to catch up on reading/posting. Your point is most correct: These are crimes. They are actually fairly common crimes. Happens to lonely older people, gay, str8 or whatever. The number of younger people out to prey on lonely older people is not zero. There were two similar crimes in Scottsdale, one against an older woman, one against an older man within the last 3-4 months.

If anyone is interested, I'll post links if I can find them.

I guess the message is that you need to keep your guard up. If something seems to good to be true, it probably is.

It is appauling and as stated happens to men and women, gay-straight-bi-transgender, these just happen to be gay men.

Three years ago a neighbour was murdered in his home, straight male that liked the down-low with street boys - he unfortunately chose unwisely one night, was stabbed to death and robbed all for $20

Nice Aaron !!!

This might be a good article to post in the Street Hustlers section !!

There was a thread awhile back on MSS that talked about client and escort safety when hiring, but I think a lot of people missed the point.

I think its very dangerous to pick up people that you might meet on the street. We use to give this info to straight women in bars, but it goes for anyone, and double if you can not physically defend yourself...although nothing stops a bullet (except that kid in "The Last Dragon" who caught it in his teeth.)

These sort of crimes bear keeping in mind, but they're certainly far from new.

Wasn't it silent film heartthrob Ramon Novarro who was killed by 2 street hustlers? With a pewter dildo (reportedly a gift from Valention) shoved down his throat?

Violence knows no age bracket, sexual preference, or time zone.

What is truly appalling is that when the perp is caught he often tries to use the "gay panic" defence - and guess what? It sometimes works.

Unfortunately, this sort of incident happens on a fairly regular basis, even in the "safest" cities. In many cases, though not all, the victim is an older, affluent gay man and the perpetrator is a younger, troubled male, often afflicted with drug or alcohol addictions. Usually, the two will meet on the turf of the younger man, a bar or an area of town known for hustlers. The mistake the victim makes is in inviting the young man to their residence, where the latter is confronted with the visible evidence of wealth, an up-scale residence, lavish furnishings, expensive art, etc.

I knew one wealthy gay lawyer years ago (who had a big drinking problem) who kept a beautiful carved silver chest on his living room coffee table full of jewels, including a fistful of unset diamonds. He was in the habit of picking up rough trade and bringing them home. Well, he never was murdered, but the treasure chest disappeared after one encounter and his country estate was burned to the ground another time (in the latter case the perpetrator had set fire to the lodge to cover up the theft of valuable art and silver objects).

As some would say, these people are an "accident waiting to happen"! :-(

This is one thing that I have never been able to get my arms around. Why anyone would invite a perfect (or imperfect) stranger, whether off the street or the internet, into their house. It seems to me a necessary though not sufficient condition to at least know their REAL name and address. Just another example of the unusual judgements that clients are capable of making.

Oh, honey this isn't a client issue. Follow manhunt.com or craigslist and you'll see anonymous hookups going on all over the world all the time. It's not AT ALL unusual for guys to get together, fuck, and part not knowing a name.

"We" used to hook up in boothstores. Now it's mostly online, but there are those that still prowl the streets. Either way, it's not restricted to commercial transactions.

Did anyone read the article right below the DC article? Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said he would welcome gay community participation in the 10-year anniversary of the Million Man March. He has denouced homosexuality as being hurtful to the african-american community in the past. Now this seems like a glimmer of hope. This is almost equivalent to Reggie White doing a 180 on his views.

Of course. I don't think that alters my observation or the prudence of the practice.

Also reminds me of Malcolm X's transformation close to the end of his life. I am suspect of Louis' motives for welcoming participation of the gay community though. Had some very interesting experiences with the Black Muslims that followed him, when I lived in Detroit
