I tried, they are based in the Netherlands (I think) and I purchased a prepaid debit card and it did not work because many of them do not support international transactions. Further, when you buy the card, you need to provide your SSN and pretty much everything that can identify you. If anyone knows of a discreet alternative I'd love to hear.

I've just discovered something unfortunate and perhaps someone has found a solution.

I have had a RentMen premium account for some time (why is another topic that's been discussed as-nauseam). In the past I have simply purchased a one-time-use prepaid credit card for the amount of the membership using cash at a convenience store.

I recently tried to renew my RM membership using such a card and it was declined. It seems that RM payments are now received outside the US (Amsterdam, I imagine). Further, I understand that any prepaid credit card that is enabled for international (online or POS) usage must be "registered with a financial institution" - i.e., you cannot pay RM client fees anonymously.

Has anyone else found this to be true and/or aware of any alternatives?

EDIT: I received a quick response from RM and the alternative is to use Bitcoin. Unfortunately my cursory research shows that to send Bitcoins requires the linking to a financial product - checking account, credit card (with the normal personally identifiable information), etc. In other words the same transparency exists. Anyone have any thoughts on maintaining a discreet RM client presence?

I recall @Kurtis Wolfe had posted some material on this topic but am unable to find it.

Maybe the "virtual credit card" I mentioned in this thread. It would still link back to you if law enforcement wanted to search you out but it would likely protect your card from fraud.

Ah yes, I remember this now. This is helpful - thank you.

I guess the question is what problem are you trying to prevent. If you are worried about credit card fraud then this works perfectly.

If you're worried about someone linking you to RM then it doesn't help very much.

When the Rentboy raid occurred I recall some worried conjecture that the Feds would pull credit card billing records to identify advertisers names and addresses. I never heard that occurred but the hypothetical scenario would be the same with RM. (Plus the risk that a nosy personal accountant would see "RentMen" on your credit card statement. )

I believe the billing appears as RM Media or something like that.

Update:

I heard from RentMen that US customers desiring an anonymous membership have a couple of payment options.

1. BitCoin - as I understand it, you have to disclose personal info to establish a BitCoin account but you can fund it using a conventional prepaid card and the recipients of any payments is anonymous. This seems like a partial solution and a bit of a pain but it's one answer.

2. A GreenDot prepaid card. I'm told that this card is accepted internationally and can be purchased without providing any personal info, just like a conventional prepaid card. Based on my research, I disagree. Has anyone used a GreenDot card?

The common wording of international-enabled credit products is:

To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires us to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. When you apply for an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, social security number, phone number and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver's license or other identifying documents, both at account opening and for additional verification after your account is opened.

This isn't an entirely academic discussion, though the existence of an iron wall on any foreign payments is an ahha-moment for me. I had assumed there was some threshold, similar to domestic cash transactions.

My assumption, and that's all it is, is that they have no way of differentiating cards that can and cannot be recharged, and the rules default to rechargeable cards which are in effect open to infinite use.
