Given that Americans refuse to even give up dollar bills in favour of a coin I suspect that cash will be around for a while.

Australia doesn't have the tipping culture that the US has, so the need for low denomination notes doesn't flow from that, but I don't recall any debate about it here either when $1 and then $2 notes were phased out, or when that happened to 1 and 2 cent coins. But then the government (or the Resreve Bank) didn't 'propose' it, they simply said it was happening. (Now, if you use cash here, it's very easy to find yourself with $20 in change in your pocket at the end of the day; in the US you're more likely to have a buck and a half, and $10 in $1 bills.)

There was an uproar however, when after the $1 and $2 notes went it was announced that the practice of having a picture of the Queen on the lowest denomination note would mean that the $5 would have her picture. There was a spate of Caroline Chisolm streets and roads (she was on the then existing $5 notes) being 'renamed' as Queen street or road etc (on the street signs at least) by helpful members of the public.

I've been approached by a few clients now saying they can only pay by google wallet or paypal and I'm just not.. really into that? I got into the escort business because it was cash and fast! Haha

A really successful business owner will adapt to what his customer want. If your customers are expressing a preference for a different method of payment, you can either accommodate and watch your business grow, or not assist your customers and watch them go to someone else who supports what they want, payment wise. Your choice!!!

The reason I do this is for Frequent Flyer cards - earlier this year we flew to Europe - a 24 hour flight from Australia - in Business Class on Singapore Airlines, if we paid cash it would have been $16500, but we used points from our everyday spend. (yes it took us 6 years to save the points but its was still a freebie) We would not have been able to pay that in cash - we would still be saving.

I never use Business Class with Frequent Flyer cards, so I have been able to fly from Philadelphia to Australia twice and Philly to Rome and Philly to Moscow for free as well as many other places. I may have made different choices if I was not already been used to flying to Australia and Asia in coach

I only use credit cards (mileage card) for travel and at gas stations. The rest for me is paid in cash. I like small credit card bills each month and I find I spend less money when using cash. I have an over 90 relative that keeps 75,000 in cash in his house in case of an apocalypse when he thinks banks will be closed for weeks. Haven't been able to convince him that this is too much - his annual living expenses are about 40% so if he paid everything in cash he doesn't need that much on hand. However, he lives alone, has lots of guns, supports Trump, believes everything Newsmax says and - well - you get the point.

I would never meet an escort with anything other than cash. I don't want a paper trail.

I wonder what the national deficit would be like if everyone paid taxes on all their income.

As I think I have said, I use a card for almost everything. I'm reasonably disciplined in what I spend. I have a credit card (points) and a loadable card (QF miles). I also have a $20 cashback pending from Amex if I spend $60 twice at BP before 10 Nov, and $150 if I spend $300 at Hilton by the end of Jan. I won't spend there just to get the rebate.

Good for you. At my old age, I wouldn't even CONSIDER flying coach (toilet class) in flights longer than 5 hours. No way!

That's the way I think but not always the way I act. I flew to the US in January in economy (as @WilliamM said he does) but used points on the return flight to upgrade to premium economy. Economy was quite bearable, but the upgrade was worth the 18k points LAX-MEL (premium is what business on QF was like 10 years ago). I'm happy to pay economy and take the risk that an upgrade isn't available.

@mike carey The payoff from me is to arrive in Australia in your summer, our winter. For me, it is more important than an upgrade.

We all make our personal choices - If you want to sit in coach thats awesome. I do sit in coach but only for short haul flights, up to 4 or hours or so.

I choose to sit in Business or First for something longer - purely for the comfort.

I feel that your tone is judging me for that.

Its not up for judgement - its what I choose to do, and if you choose to use your points in coach that is awesome, it is obviously something you are happy with, and equally I am happy for you.

I was using the example purely as a reason why we choose to use a credit card with points - those flights saved us $16500.

How you choice to use cards or cash is your business.

I don't differentiate between the use of points or cash for flights. If I want to fly J I'll pay the cash or points I need to pay. If I'm happy to pay for Y and gamble on a points upgrade, I'll do that. The dollar value of your points varies greatly between gift cards, flights and upgrades, work out what's the best deal and act on it.

When I decided early to never use points for anything but coach, I also vowed to stick to that plan except for a free upgrade to first class. Lufhansa is particularly good in flexibility of stops in returning from Russia in coach.
